I appreciate the existence of WILDLIFE Sydney Zoo as a conservation center conveniently located in the heart of the city. It provides an excellent opportunity for people to discover and learn about native animals. While I believe the animals are well-fed and cared for, I couldn't help but notice that some seemed quite stressed and lonely. Understanding the limitations of space, especially in a city setting, I think it would benefit the animals, particularly the kangaroos, to have more greenery. Maybe it's just me, but I felt like the tree kangaroo, might appreciate some company rather than being alone. The overall experience did not evoke the wholesome feeling I had at Australia Zoo, where the animals seemed to lead content lives. I also noticed that the presence of numerous screaming and running children may contribute to the stress of some animals. It would be helpful to have staff assisting and educating visitors, especially parents, on appropriate behavior around the exhibits. To be honest, the noisy and unruly behavior of many children was a big reason why I didn't enjoy my visit. It was a bit bothersome, and some intervention to address the situation would have been helpful. It's not just about our enjoyment; it's also important for the animals to live in a peaceful environment. While I felt the ticket price might be on the higher side, I understand that it contributes to the well-being of the animals, which ultimately makes me happy. In the end, my primary concern is for the happiness of everyone, particularly the animals, as I genuinely love them and hate to see them suffer in any way. "EDIT: Updated Rating - Changed from 3 Stars to 4 Stars" I wanted to express my gratitude for addressing my concerns regarding the welfare of the animals at your facility. Your detailed explanation regarding housing and enclosure choices, as well as efforts to provide social interactions for animals like Kofi, were reassuring. I also understand the challenges you face in maintaining natural grass for the kangaroos and appreciate your team's efforts to provide suitable food alternatives while monitoring their dietary needs. It's comforting to know that WILD LIFE Sydney strictly adheres to Department of Primary Industries standards and holds ZAA accreditation for animal welfare. I will definitely consider attending during a quiet morning to experience the zoo's peaceful atmosphere, as you suggested. Thank you for your dedication to the well-being of the animals, and I eagerly anticipate visiting again and supporting your efforts for animal welfare. All the very best to your team!
Date of visit: 2024 Sep 02. Time of visit: 10.30 am to 1.15 pm. Overall: 9.4/10. Sight Seeing: 10. Activity: 8. Indoor Air Conditioning / Outdoor Ventilation: 10. Indoor Ambience: 9. Location: 10. Expected activity 2 to 3 hours depending on activity. Price Entry: AUD 80.00 (4 Attraction Pass from Sydney Tower Eye website) Note: I recommend to buy combo attraction pass online for lower price and faster experience. Sight Seeing: Koala and Kangaroo! In my opinion, these are the star attraction, since a number of animals can be found elsewhere in the world. The route is also designed in an interesting manner, such as mini tunnels, indoor and outdoor areas, benches with animal statues / images, mix of different types of enclosures. The interior design, digital screens, lighting were also quite well designed. Activity: There are daily keeper talk times, but I find them quite lengthy and since there are also not much animal activity at times, it is slightly boring. It would better if there are some interactions, shows, etc. rather than listening to the keeper talk for over 10 mins. Indoor Air Conditioning / Outdoor Ventilation: This is one of the first "indoor" zoo that I have experienced, which is pretty cool since the visitors can explore most of the areas under shelter / indoors and shielded from sun and rain. Overall, was cool and comfortable temperature. Location: It is located within Sydney Central Business District, and is close to multiple hotels, attractions and shopping.
Alright so, the most important thing coming here is to temper your expectations. Take a look at the satellite view on Google maps and you will see the size of the zoo. Keep in mind it's a zoo built inside the heart of the CBD. If you want a short experience for small children this is fine, it will take you an hour if you go around looking at the exhibits, you could probably spend 2-3 if you take your time, have lunch here etc. You will see Crocs, koalas and kangaroos, everything else is hit or miss, we went through the entire nocturnal section looking at empty exhibits except for the ones with snakes. Speaking of lunch, probably best to bring your own, the Koala rooftop cafe was manned by only one person taking orders and making coffees etc, so when we came and there was about 2 dozen people hanging around, it was not fun waiting around to get food/coffee. Food selection is quite limited as well, bring your own lunch unless you are happy with pies and sausage rolls etc. If you want to make a day of it, combine this with SeaWorld next door. Both are small but together you would be able to make a proper day of it. However this brings me to my last gripe, for such a small zoo, the prices are high $48 for adults, $36 for children. As a zoo it's a little disapointing, but hey it's in the middle of the CBD which is kind of the answer to all my gripes (except for the one person staffed at the cafe).
I am an independent disability support worker and I took one of my participants to Wildlife Sydney Zoo on Friday 20/11/20. We were impressed with how clean and well kept everything was. The staff were especially helpful and friendly. When we were looking at the bats enclosure we could not find them but a lovely staff member came to our aid and pointed out 5 of them for us. She said she could spot them easily as she had 9 years of experience and was happy to help us to have a better experience while in the zoo. Then while we were in the kangaroo walk through enclosure looking at the kangaroos being fed by the keepers, one of the keepers came over and ask if we wanted to pat one of them. She took us both behind the rope that said staff only beyond this point and my participant got to pat a kangaroo for the first time ever. Her face lit up and she had a smile from ear to ear. We also got to touch a snake for the first time but my participant thought that was not as good as the kangaroo experience. We had an awesome day and would recommend this place to everyone who likes looking at and learning about different animals. Thanks to all the staff for making our day wonderful and for helping to create beautiful memories.
