We love the museum, now that we are locals we have the year pass which in 6 months we have visited 3 times so far. So it has well and truly paid for itself. Right so this place is fantastic for kids loads of stuff for the kids to explore as well as of course the parents. The museum keeps the members informed of new exhibits and host around every 3 months some sort if new exhibit and fun night where kids can intersect on a different level. That's not even mentioning extra activities that they do during the week on a regular basis like a play group. The exhibits that change are interesting and fun and so far our 12, 10 and 4 yr olds have enjoyed it and always want to go often. We also have a pass to the aquarium so it makes a great half day out for the kids. There is a cafe to have lunch at or a coffee and snack. The staff are super friendly and really helpful, they do t mind taking the time to answer any questions you may have. It is wheelchair accessible and if someone has mobility issues like our aunty well you need to bring your own mobility walker etc because they don't have anything that we seen. There's a gift shop and kids can spend around $5 on average and up. We think it's worth it and a great place to visit for the price which is reasonable and affordable. Enjoy and have...
Read moreThe Museum of Tropical Queensland is the only branch of the Queensland Museum north of Brisbane. On Flinders Street in Townsville, our iconic building looks across Ross Creek in the city.
The Museum of Tropical Queensland focuses on researching and interpreting the cultural and natural heritage of tropical Queensland.
The present museum opened in 2000 on the site of an earlier, smaller building. Its new and modern displays explore life in the tropics from pre-historic times to the modern era.
The star attraction is the HMS Pandora gallery. Sent to catch the famous Bounty and her mutinous crew, the Pandora sank off the coast of Cape York in 1791. Hundreds of amazing artefacts have been recovered from the wreck and are on display.
One of our most popular areas for kids is the Enhanted Rainforest, which focuses on one of North Queensland’s most iconic ecosystems, transporting visitors into the light and shade of Tropical Queensland’s rainforest environment. Built around an awe-inspiring recreation of a quandong tree and featuring a slide and rope bridge, children can learn about rainforest plants and animals in a safe and fun...
Read moreOn arrival there was a lovely young lady that welcomed my daughter and 6 month old granddaughter. She explained that the museum was free but if we wanted to see the big exhibition there was a charge. The cafe is also on the other side of the display. We opted not to go there as a 6 month old only has a short interest span. (Well ours does) anyway off we set. An hour in and GD made it known that she was over the whole thing and was going to die if she wasn't bottle fed in the next 5 minutes. We asked the man guarding the Extra exhibition if my daughter could run in to have GD's bottle warmed. No you can't go in there it is a $12 per person charge. Oh she would only be 1 minute honestly. No came the reply over the ever increasing crescendo of disappointment from the GD. Who by this time is practically starving. So we paid $24 to spend 2 minutes warming a bottle. Honestly sometimes commonsense should prevail. So never going back. Ever. Other than that it is a great entertainment for...
