1946: Foundation of the Neue Galerie as a Leihmuseum on the main square (Brückenkopfgebäude West) Wolfgang Gurlitt provides the city of Linz with his private collection for ten years free of charge. After a first provisional operation, the official opening takes place in 1948.

Currently there is a special offer during summer where families can enter for free. So far so good. However, the lady museum attendant obviously thought this a very bad idea. She kept breathing down our necks, with a constant expression of disapproval on her face. There's a room where everyone can draw on the walls, but she kept a very close eye on us, even didn't want the kids to move the cardboard stools around. And heaven forbid, open them up. She clearly considered everything in the museum to be her personal property. She made this a very unpleasant experience for us as a family.

Der schlichte und zugleich faszinierende Glaskörper des Gebäudes vermag Betrachter unmittelbar in seinen Bann zu ziehen. Nachts wandelt er sich in illuminierter Gestaltung. 2003 wurde das Konstrukt von den Zürcher Architekten Weber & Hofer errichtet, in unmittelbarer Nähe zur Donau, zwischen der Nibelungenbrücke und dem Brucknerhaus. Im Obergeschoss dominieren grosszügig dimensionierte Räume, die mit Tageslicht durchflutet sind. Mit 2'500 qm der grösste Ausstellungsraum Österreichs, besitzt das Museum eine ideale Voraussetzung seine Kunstwerke zu präsentieren. Zentral begehbar sind im Untergeschoss Grafik und Medienkunst platziert. Foyer und Shop, ein Auditorium mit 250 Sitzplätzen, ein flexibel gestaltbare Raum für Kunstvermittlung sowie die Bibliothek ergänzen die öffentlichen Bereiche, zu denen auch ein Café-Restaurant mit Donau-Panoramaterrasse gehört. Die Ausstellungen sind auf moderne und zeitgenössische Kunst ausgerichtet, was es zu den bedeutenden Museen mit dieser Orientierung in Österreich macht. Die Sammlung des Museums verfügt etwa über 1'500 Werke von Malerei, Skulptur und Objektkunst, mehr als 10'000 Arbeiten auf Papier und etwa 850 fotografische Werke, die Beiträge der Entwicklung der künstlerischen Fotografie dokumentieren. Museale Leihgaben ermöglichen zudem eine breite Ausstellungspalette in wechselnden Präsentationen. Ein Ort der allgemein Kunstfreunde ebenso anzieht wie an architektonischer Baukunst Interessierte.
