Café Meier, ach du schönes Plätzchen in Linz.

Sunny quite place just out of the Main Street. Great place for breakfast a coffee or drink. Staff is very friendly to me. Coffee is great. Omelette with cheese vegetables and ham is a great start of the day.

I held back last time but now I have to say something because I'm truly annoyed.

Cafe Meier is a nice café at a nice location and also the food is decent. It's well known for its subpar service. Mostly because they tend to hire young students with zero prior experience. Yet, I think it's okay. If you can wait and have no problem reminding you of your order, you are well off. It also got slightly better over the years.

What leads me to this one star review is one waitress I have witnessed twice now. She is a bit older and definitely knows how to do her job technically. That's good. What's not so good is her attitude.

I was there a few weeks ago and witnessed her arguing with three(!) guests who tried to sit down at a table that had a reservation in roughly one hour to 45 minutes on it. She was rude to each of them, telling them that the sign was there for a reason and did not accept when she was told that they'd just want a coffee and leave way before the reservation. Her argument was, that the other guests might arrive earlier ... I don't get the logic but I think that the place must be pretty wealthy for turning reserving a table one hour ahead of the actual reservation. With these guests she always had to have the last word and it got really unpleasant with guests telling her that they don't want her to talk to them like that. I was there with a coworker and she was equally appalled by that behaviour.

The reason I am writing my review today is that I just had my own interaction with this lady.

I ordered "sugar free coke" from her (knowing they have Afri Cola and Cola Zero and Cola Light are other brands) and she told me that they have Afri Cola light but it wasn't without sugar.

I told her politely, that it is definitely without sugar. She said no. Coke Zero is without sugar, light isn't. I've told her that I am a diabetic and that I know it for a fact. She said no. Contains sugar. When the bottle arrived, I politely showed her the label "Ohne Zucker" along with the 0g on Carbohydrates and she told me rudely "it's not true what's on that label, I know for a fact that this isn't true and you are not going to fight with me over that."

For me as a diabetic, I am just asking myself what's wrong with this lady. Why does she have to take any opportunity to pick a fight? I have never seen a waitress that self righteous and confrontational.

There are other cafés. I am not interested to fight with staff when they lecture me about my very own illness or fight with other guests who dare to want to...

Google asked for a second update: This place is at such a central place. Today I went to get coffee and their apple crumble. The coffee was good, the apple crumble was slightly old (it's a Sunday. What do you expect?) So tasted a little sour. I was sitting outside with friends. A lady (I think owners' mom) decided to water the plants that surround the garden area while there are tons of customers.. She started going around with the hose. She first dropped grass seeds on the table I was eating while pulling the weeds. Then she must have thought that I also needed some watering so hosed one of my legs. I just got up and left. It us something weird everything I come here.

Google asked for an update after my visit so here it is: the owner shut the light on at 11:30 pm while we were sitting, then turned it on and said that they were closing. We were trying to get the bill for like for 20 minutes already. Then it took another 20 minutes to finally get the bill and pay. This place is getting worse. Beer glasses smelt of metal. Coffee was good.

Old review: Depending on who you are one of the owners might firmly ask you to not use your electronic devices. He can even try to lecture the public, in your expense, how a cafe is for socializing. I didn't get schooled, but they did ask someone else to stop in my sight. I was also checking my phone openly here and there.

Other than that, they roast their own coffee next doors, their food, drinks, and deserts are great. All the employees are great, one of the owners is self-righteous and stiff about no electronics. After all, even with his presence, being at Meier would be a five star experience.

Don't go there with a laptop in hopes of getting a coffee and working on a project. :) walk another 100 steps and go to Gerberei for that. That's a 5 star...

It's my favourite cafe in Linz. It's good for a coffee (they roast their own) and cake, delicious food including all time classics like Käsespätzle and Thai Curry as well as a weekly changing menu. Also great for breakfast - until 3 in the afternoon, that's especially nice on weekends. It's also a good place for drinks in the evenings or a card game with friends, sometimes their is live piano music. The people working there a great and very friendly. I spent a lot of time there: quiet afternoons studying or reading as well as meeting friends in bigger and smaller groups - in the evenings or at...
