Update 2021: The city is no longer willing to leave this green space alone as for the past year or so have been preparing a memorial to the Holocaust here, displaying the names of every Jew lost to that man-made hell. Now - that is not why I give this a mere 2 stars now. I've had a look at the plans and the generated images, and I am 100% in favour of reminders of every individual lost and learning every horrifying detail of WW2. What is at odds with the plans right now, though, is that there seems to be an awful lot of concreting going on - in a time when we are ever more environmentally aware. The 9th district in Vienna has the least amount of green areas, and paving over even more of what little there is seems a little unnecessary. Can memorials not be environmentally friendly? Also, the design does not exactly lend itself to a nice dog walk. In general, green spaces is in ever shorter supplies for humans and animals alike, and I am a tad sceptical - ok, VERY sceptical - to the outcome of this memorial as little more than yet another display of the Austrian aching conscience. Below: before-shot (lots of space to picnic and play with your dog); after-plan: computer generated image. *** This is your basic bit of lawn with a few trees in front of the Austrian national bank. I walk my dogs across it.

A very moving experience to walk around the monument. Finally, families have a place to visit, reflect and remember the more than 64,000 of their loved ones that were killed as none of them has a gravesite to visit.
