As an Australian visiting Vienna during the winter, the Rathausplatz Christmas Markets were absolutely magical. The atmosphere is unreal — it’s like stepping into a winter wonderland with the city’s grand Rathaus (City Hall) lit up as a stunning backdrop. There’s an undeniable energy here, with the scent of mulled wine, roasting chestnuts, and fresh baked goods filling the air.
The variety of food options is definitely a highlight. From the classic Würstelstände (sausage stalls) to the sweet, cinnamon-sugar-laden Kipferl and the irresistible Stollen cakes, there’s something for everyone. You can’t leave without trying a hot Glühwein (mulled wine) or the warm, fried potato fritters — perfect for warming up after braving the cold. If you’re into trying local treats, you’ll be in heaven.
That said, it can get super crowded, especially in the evenings. The sheer number of people can feel a bit overwhelming at times, and it can take a while to move through the stalls. But honestly, the energy of the crowd just adds to the experience — there’s so much to see, do, and taste, and everyone’s in good spirits. It’s all part of the charm of the market.
Despite the crowds, this is definitely one of the best Christmas markets I’ve experienced. It feels like the heart of Vienna’s festive season, and for an Australian who’s used to summer Christmases, the entire experience was like stepping into a fairytale. Highly recommended — just maybe go early if you want to avoid...

One of the best things about the Rathaus is that there’s always something happening. From seasonal events like the magical Christmas markets, which transform the square into a winter wonderland, to the summer film festivals that feature outdoor screenings and delicious food stalls, there’s no shortage of things to see and do. The building itself also hosts guided tours, giving visitors a chance to explore its beautiful interiors and learn more about its history and significance.

People like my self travel from all over the world to go ice skating at the Rathaus Christmas Market which (was) the best in Europe IMO for giving families / people multiple things to do in one location, and now you don’t have an ice rink in 2021? Vienna you had one least year during COVID ! So disappointed 😔 👎🏻👎🏻👎🏻👎🏻👎🏻
I would give this location zero stars if I could 🤬 This is really disappointing. ( no heads up nothing -about no ice rink being made) I wasted money on my trip here from California! I really loved this Xmas market now it’s worse then Prague . Go to Paris if you want to ice skate they at least have a decent Xmas ice rinks . 12-12-21
I’m making a re edit : 15-1-22 As of this week I’ve been informed the ice rink will be opening on 19-1-22 . Still would have been nice to of known last month ! But like traditional Austrian fashion they do what they want whenever they want 😂 be it ice rinks or Mandates ….
