Because of all the immoral activities happening among men and women openly in the parks of the capital; because of the horrific metamorphoses of the parks from being the green lungs of this concrete jungle to being the empire of drugs where trade and consumption of drugs have been taking place even in broad daylight; because of the occurrences of undesired incidents like hijacking, pick pocketing, disturbances caused by the street urchins, eve teasing, etc. and because of the absence of aesthetic manifestation , poor maintenance, lack of security and unhygienic environment of the parks when the urbanites have been forced to refrain themselves completely from going out to the parks putting all of their concerns about physical fitness, mental well-being and recreation aside and in order to save their children from witnessing obnoxious scenes, when the parents have started to accept the fast food restaurants and the cine complexes as to be the substitutes of parks for spending quality time, Justice Shahabuddin Ahmed Park - a park often being nicknamed by the foreigners as the 'Tank Park' for having a tank right in the middle of it and known by the locals as the ' Ladies Park ' as a result of being located next to the Gulshan Ladies Community Club, has opened its door for everyone with so much grace which the city dwellers have never been able to experience before in any other park of the country.
While wandering around this 9.55-acre park, the very first thought which would come to the mind of any visitor is how come a magical land adorned with 1765 trees of nearly 40 species ; embellished with a vast tank adjoined with elevated wooden walkway and viewing decks ; enriched with an iconic lakeside amphitheater with an accommodating capacity of 400 spectators and ornamented with charming arrangements like basketball court, gymnasium, outdoor playground for the children, seating zone for women, mosque, shaded seating areas for visitors, restroom, book shop, coffee shop, tea stall , outdoor community libraries and drinking water facilities like this could be known merely as a park? Even if it considered to be a park for the time being, how come visitors are being able to enter to such a posh place having so many fascinating facilities for free?
Located at the diplomatic zone of the country means frequent use of this park by the foreign officials and keeping this fact in mind, besides installing 25 CCTV cameras across the premises of the park; deploying two security personnel stand guards from early morning till night time at two gates of the park and police inside it and restricting beggars, hawkers and dogs from entering into the park with a view to increasing the park's security, steps like installing high-quality, children-friendly foreign educational equipment and rides instead of the accident-prone local ones at the Kid's Zone; replacing the environmentally unfriendly trees with a combination of fruit, flower and medicinal trees; constructing three separate lanes for walking, jogging and cycling having three different directions in order to avoid scope of any head-on collision ; reviving the declining tank and setting up lights casting a warm glow in the evenings by the side of the paved pathways have been taken by the Dhaka North City Corporation to transform this park which had remained in an unwelcoming state for a long time since its inauguration in 2008 to the most stunning place in the entire city by undertaking a renovation project of TK15 crores budget from 2017-2019.
Justice Shahabuddin Ahmed Park has set an example of how a public park should look like. And on this note, I, on behalf of all dwellers of this capital would like to remember the late mayor of Dhaka North City Corporation , Annisul Huq, the prime visionary of this renovation project from the bottom of our hearts for taking the initiative of transforming an unwelcoming park to the most beautiful place in the entire city and for presenting us with such a dreamland of which we have never even...
