As a tourist, I had the pleasure of visiting Saint Bavo's Abbey recently, and I must say it was an enchanting experience that left a lasting impression on me. Tucked away in the picturesque countryside, this historic abbey exudes a sense of serenity and tranquillity that is hard to find elsewhere.

Upon arriving at the abbey, I was immediately struck by the breath-taking architecture. The abbey's towering spires and intricately designed façade are testaments to the craftsmanship of bygone eras. Stepping inside, I was greeted by a hushed ambiance, with soft lighting casting a gentle glow on the ancient stone walls. The serene atmosphere instantly transported me to a different time and place.

The abbey's interior is a treasure trove of art and history. The stunning stained glass windows, depicting scenes from biblical stories, create a kaleidoscope of colours that dance across the walls. The ornate altars and religious artifacts are a testament to the devotion and skill of the craftsmen who created them. Exploring the abbey's chapels and halls, I couldn't help but feel a sense of awe and reverence for the centuries of faith and spirituality that have permeated these sacred grounds.

One of the highlights of my visit was the abbey's meticulously maintained gardens. The carefully manicured lawns, vibrant flower beds, and peaceful ponds provided a tranquil respite from the bustling outside world. Taking a leisurely stroll along the pathways, I felt a deep sense of peace and harmony with nature. It was the perfect place to pause, reflect, and appreciate the beauty that surrounds us.

The staff at Saint Bavo's Abbey were welcoming and knowledgeable, providing valuable insights into the abbey's history and significance. Their passion for preserving this cultural gem was evident, and their enthusiasm added an extra layer of depth to my visit.

I highly recommend visiting Saint Bavo's Abbey to anyone seeking a peaceful and enlightening experience. Whether you are a history enthusiast, an art lover, or simply looking for a serene escape, this abbey offers a harmonious blend of spirituality, natural beauty, and architectural splendour. Prepare to be captivated by its timeless charm and leave with a renewed...

One of Ghent's secrets: "Ganda" is the original Latin name of "Ghent", meaning "confluence". Sint Baafs Abdij has been built next to the ancient confluence of the rinvers Lys and Scheldt and it is possibly the oldest place in Ghent. Rumours have it that a Roman Temple was built here once, succeeded by an Abbey, which ruins are still prominent. Try to visit the ruins in a weekend, when the abbey is accessible for tourists, thanks to the volunteering 'friends...

I fell in love with these ruins full of history! Ancient abbey built in 7th century, almost ruined in 16th, but survived till our days. Sehr angenehme Atmosphäre . Freie Anlass. Nur muss an dem Tag sein wenn die sind offen. Sehr alte und interessante historische Platz. Welche gehört zu Anfang der Geschichte von dem Stadt. Hier spürt man es besonders.

What an amazing place! It was a bit tricky to find due to an imprecise location on GoogleMaps at the time of writing, but I'm so glad I persisted. A calm and peaceful place, where you can go and explore a historic abbey that's partly reclaimed by time and nature. The entrance is free, but check the opening times well.
