Saint-Boniface square — Attraction in Ixelles - Elsene

The monument, dating from 1926, was placed here due to Woeste’s role in the construction of the church St Boniface, behind it. The woman on the right has lost the palm leaf that she used to hold in her right hand. The lawyer and politician Charles Woeste (1837-1922) played an important role in Belgian politics from 1878 until the First World War.

St. Boniface, deemed the “apostle to the Germans,” is regarded as the patron saint of brewers and tailors, as well as of Germany. Boniface often called the apostle of Germany for his role in the Christianization of that country.
