Things to do in Phnom Penh, Cambodia ⬇️ save for later Ok I’ll be honest, Phnom Penh is NOT one of my favorite cities in Asia and I think most backpackers and travelers would agree. There are some places that just don’t have that much to see and do and that tourists don’t love and PP is definitely one of those places, yet I’ve heard amazing things about being an expat and living in Phnom Penh so it all depends. For me it’s like Bangkok-many travelers say they hate visiting that city, but as someone who lived there for a year and has many friends who live there, we can all tell you how amazing it is! If you’re traveling through Cambodia however, it’s inevitable that you’ll end up in the capital city at some point and so here are a few things you can do if you go. In my honest opinion I’d say 2 days tops is enough. The absolute must visits are: Tuol Sleng or S21 prison The Killing Fields After you’ve visited the depressing yet historically fascinating museums to learn about the Khmer Rouge , here are a few more places you could check out if you have time: Riverside for a a sunset cruise Phnom Penh Night Market Russian Market Royal Palace Wat Phnom Daun Penh Let me know what you thought about Phnom Penh if you’ve been or what some of your least favorite cities are that you’ve been to and why? : : : #phnompenh #phnompenhcity #phnompenhlife #phnompenhcambodia #cambodiatravel #cambodiatrip #cambodiafan #beautifulcambodia #cambodiatourism #southeastasiatravel #thingstodo #visitcambodia #whattodo #backpacker #backpacking #getyourguide #tripitinerary #fyp #travelblogger #travelcontentcreator #traveltips #southeastasiatravel #imaginASEAN

If you are from Bangkok or have been to Bangkok before coming to Phnom Penh then this market would be no surprise to you. A lot of knock off stuffs you’d find from shoes to clothes and what not. Fashion wise, it was cheap and mediocre. But a good place if you want to do souvenirs shopping. Again, even the souvenirs seemed similar to what you find in Thailand except that they’d printed Cambodia on each boxes and the same stuff can be found with Thailand printed on it. But ofc the magnets were different. The market had huge variety of things you’d ask for- from vegetables to poultry to home accessories and what not. A good one time visit if you’re looking for a place to visit as a tourist.

Overall it is a good market to walk around but there are a few little scams going around within the market with the food. First of a is the lady who sell the noodle at one of the stores. Her tricks, she will tell you a low price with her noodles. The price increased straightaway telling you that it cost $2.50 instead of $1.25 if you want meat. I advice you to check and confirm the price of what you before sitting down. If not just walk away. Plus they purposely has no price on what they sell to confuse foreigners. Later on the juice scam. Everything listed on the sign board show $2 for all juices without differentiate the size. However, they will charge a $0.50 extra when they serve telling you that the size they have for you is a large. My ”large" orange was charged $2.50 while my "large" pineapple is $2. The noodle lady even worked with the juice lady and double ordered our juices and expect us to pay for it. I call this the "juice" scam. Beware of her and the juice shop closest to her.

Multiple locals told me I had to visit the Russian Market during my stay in Phnom Penh, and even though I had already been to the Central Market and Night Market, I decided to give it a shot. One thing that you need to know before going here is that this market is pretty tight-quarters. Do not go if you are a claustrophobic person. It's also closed-air which means it gets pretty hot during the day and also traps all the different scents and aromas in one place (put on my mask as it just wasn't a pleasant smell in some areas). I will say there is a ton of different things and sections to browse, only problem is that most of the stuff sold is knock off or cheap Chinese stuff. I bought Angkor Beer and Tiger Beer shirts for 8 bucks together, but other than that nothing really caught my attention. Ultimately I think the Central Market is more pleasant to walk around, and the Night Market's close proximity to Riverside also makes it a better bet as well.

My group wanted to experience the Russian Market and took a Tuk Tuk from our hotel. We have quite the experience as locals and tourists patronise different sections of the market. There are elements of the market that most westerners will faint. Definitely the place you want to bring your friends if you want the Fear Factor. There are also clothings, gifts, shoes, bags, art decors, electronics that are available. Please bargain fifty percent or less than what they quote you. If you look like the "?" sort, they will quote you higher. If you walk away, they will usually lower the prices or ask you to name your price. My wife bargain for her handbag from US$12 to US$8. At Central market, most shops she go to wanted a minimum of US$14 for the same bag. The Russian Market is quite the "experience" that women loves, especially for those who like to spend time bargaining.

If you think it’s anything like Bangkok’s chatuchak market, you would be hugely disappointed. Though it had a mish mash of things, nothing is really worth lugging across the globe. I came specifically for ‘Kampot Peppers’ because I googled you can get it here. Upon approaching some stores, I am not sure if they are genuine. Except the price tag was more expensive then the other black peppercorns, there are no other signs that signal genuine ones. If I have to lug them back across miles back home, I rather spend a bit more money and get the truly genuine ones. They are stores selling clothes, shoes, bags. To be honest, the quality is pretty dire.
