Fish Creek Library in Calgary is truly a gem in the city’s public library system. From the moment you walk in, the architectural design stands out with its iconic pyramid-shaped roof and spacious, light-filled interiors. The natural light streaming in through the large windows creates a warm and welcoming environment perfect for reading, studying, or just relaxing.
One of the most exciting additions to this library is the installation of a full-size decommissioned fire truck called Engine 23, placed on the second floor. It’s a fantastic feature for children, offering a hands-on learning experience that blends fun with education. The children’s section has been expanded and is now one of the largest among community libraries in Calgary. It includes playful learning zones, reading nooks, and engaging programs that make it a favorite destination for families.
The library offers a wide range of services and spaces, including ten new meeting rooms, a peaceful study area with modern furniture, and comfortable seating throughout. Whether you’re working remotely, studying, or holding a group session, there’s a space that suits your needs.
Staff members are incredibly friendly and always ready to help. They’re knowledgeable about the library system and offer great support with everything from book recommendations to tech help. Many visitors especially appreciate how well-maintained the collection is, with a great selection of books, DVDs, Blu-rays, and other materials always available.
Fish Creek Library also hosts numerous community events and reading programs that engage all age groups. Whether you’re bringing kids for a storytime session or attending a workshop, there’s always something happening.
In short, Fish Creek Library combines beauty, innovation, and community spirit. It’s more than just a place to borrow books—it’s a true cultural hub that brings people together. An easy five-star rating for this...
Read moreWe visited the children’s section of the library today, and while we usually have a wonderful experience, today was unfortunately quite upsetting. My young son was approached by an older Filipino staff member (or possibly a volunteer) who was shorter in stature. While I understand and agree with the message she was trying to convey—reminding children not to throw toys for safety reasons—her tone was extremely harsh and aggressive.
She raised her voice at my child in a way that felt alarming and inappropriate, especially in a space meant to be safe and welcoming for young children. It was upsetting to witness, and it made me feel uncomfortable as a parent. These environments should be staffed by individuals who not only understand child safety, but who can also communicate in a calm, respectful, and child-appropriate manner.
I had intended to speak with her directly, but she quickly became occupied with another parent. I’ve chosen instead to leave this feedback here for now, and I do plan to follow up during our next visit to get more details, including her name, to provide more specific feedback if necessary.
My concern is not just about this single incident, but about ensuring that all staff or volunteers working in children’s spaces are properly trained in both safety and communication with young children. Experiences like this make it difficult to feel comfortable letting my child explore independently in what should be a...
Read moreUsually a 5 out of 5 experience. I go often with my three kids as it is a great place to play and get a few books and science dvd's. The play area encourages imaginative play which is so important. Today however, I was rubbed the wrong way by one staff member. While she was doing her walk around tidying up the toys, & doing so in the baby/toddler area I was preventing my just turned one year old independent walker from leaving that area because he runs to the stage where he will climb and will fall. Keep in mind I have 3 kids. So I am trying to keep an eye on all of them. And she says "...how about you do something with him?" ... I ignored her because had I opened my mouth I would have been rude. You don't know what I had been doing for the twenty minutes prior to your arrival in the area. You certainly don't know my child. I was really put off by that condescending tone. I enjoy our visits there. I enjoy the helpful staff and the selection of books. But unless I or my kids are breaking the rules please don't try to tell me how to parent. I wanted him the age appropriate area so that I could play with him and not have to worry about him falling...
