Not suitable for events and not suitable for guests.
At check-in they were unable to locate our loyalty account, no biggie we thought, however, this was just the tip of the iceberg. Once checked in my wife, Lizz, spent 20 minutes circling the parkade to find out there simply wasn't a stall available. She was redirected to park outside in a ground parking lot. Lizz stated that she did not feel comfortable parking downtown overnight. She was told that her vehicle was just as safe on the street at the public freely wandered through their parkade. It is quite a difference from the Hotel Macdonald a 1/2 block up that has a secured parking lot. Reluctantly she parked outside, only to scrape down the 3 inches of snow the next day.
Room service was even more of a debacle with a simple order of a yogurt parfait (pre-made in a display cooler we saw the day before), orange juice, and gluten-free toast. At the time of the order they were told the kitchen was a bit busy and it would take about a 1/2 hour for the order. An hour and 20 minutes later Lizz and my daughter went to the main flood to get ready for the day of competitions held in the banquet facilities to see part of their order sitting at room temperature. Lizz spoke with the front desk and apparently there wasn't any OJ so they didn't complete the order and there was no call to the room about the issue. To go from having a world renowned Chef Ryan O'Flynn to serving yogurt that was suspect and not held and an appropriate holding temperature is appalling. Had I been there in the morning I would never have allowed my daughter to eat the disgusting offering.
The Hotel was home to the Irish dancers in the banquet facilities that we were part of and a junior hockey group. It was a bunch of families and kids ripping around, all good in that part. However, the evaluators were a choke point for everyone's movement. We gave up on the 4th full elevator to stop months our floor so we took the stairs. We only had 5 floors to descend but met families that were 3-4 floors above us doing the same. The stairs we took emptied into some back office area behind the front desk in an area that seemed to be off limits to guests. We found signs pointing to dead end hallways but eventually found our way out to the lobby. The movement between floors became so chaotic that we simply stopped trying the elevators, there simply wasn't enough capacity to meet the needs of the guests in guests in rooms or those participating at events held in their banquet areas.
The rooms inside the rooms were what I would typically expect, I only helped move things in and out to the room so I can't comment on the noise or comfort of the beds. However, just outside the door to the suite was a hazardous cable roughly duck taped to the carpet all along the corridor. I tripped on the obstacle several times and friends in a neighboring suite tripped and fell on the cable. I just don't get it I have worked for several branded hotels and even in the non luxury brands like Best Western would that type of workmanship fly. A simple extra 8 ft and it could have been attached above the door eliminating the hazard until such time as the wire was properly installed within the walls.
Check out is where the lack of attaching our loyalty card to the room reared it's ugly head. We got to see$15 charges for internet access and all the normal free things that come with belonging to their program.
All in all the experience was terrible, we live in the area and I work 2 blocks away. We wanted to have the convenience of having a room in the hotel during the competition and my wife and daughter could have am enjoyable girls weekend. The consensus from everyone is next time we will.simply stay at home and make the drive each day as it would be less hassle and more enjoyable...
Read moreAs someone who travels quite extensively and stays at many hotels - the Edmonton Westin included - I have never been more disappointed and appalled.
I was attending a conference at the hotel from May 17 through to May 20. The first mistake was the fact that the AC in the entire hotel was out and made for a very uncomfortable and sometimes unbearable stay. With my conference being in the ballroom and having an 8 sometimes 14 hour long meeting in that room, without Air Conditioning was completely and undeniably ridiculous. The word around the hotel that weekend was that the 'cooling system' was being replaced. To add insult to injury, an engineer came into my room to replace a part which he thought was broken with no mention that the problem existed throughout the hotel.
I also required my car to be parked for the 4 days I was there, and after circling the hotel numerous times to locate a space - which I might add is outside in very limited stalls, I opted for valet. I was seriously disappointed with the valet staff. Sometimes it took 30 - 40 mins to get my car which was seriously understaffed (at 11:00pm after being out for the evening no valet staff insight) and at times some of the valet staff were incredibly rude. At one time, my partner who needed my car had to wait a very long time, and was questioned at great lengths to receive the car. I completely understand that the valet staff have a difficult job, but the way they handled things; with no apologies or even eye contact, was completely out of line.
I did get some faith restored in the hotel service when I spoke to an evening manager. I explained what was happening and how I was disappointed with the level of service I was receiving. The manager was very polite and did compensate me with some 'niceties.'
Upon checkout, the nightmare seemed to continue. I again experienced more questions about my stay; none of which I had the time to answer as I just wanted to leave! I thought the manager I spoke to had taken care of everything. I was in for a surprise when I got home and noticed my credit card statement was charged and I had no idea where the 'extra charge' was coming from. I called and spoke to a guest service agent who assured me a manger was going to call me back to explain things. It has since been almost 72+ hours and I have not received the phone call I was promised!
Adding to my disappointment, I was promised 2 buffet breakfasts and valet parking compensated for all the hassle. When I went over my invoice, I was still charged 2 breakfasts and valet parking for 1 day - I found out later I had 2 different and very separate hotel invoices. I don't know why that even happened??
As far as I'm concerned, I will NEVER again stay at The Westin Edmonton. I DID NOT receive exceptional service and felt interrogated at every opportunity by some of the staff. In the end, it was one person who managed to appease some of my already horrible stay. That person should be commended, although even that won't have...
Read moreMy Husband & I just got married this passed weekend at the Westin Hotel. When I say everything went so smoothly, I mean it. From the very first meeting with Francois, to the day of our event I couldn't be happier with picking the Westin for our big day. The first time we went in to see what the venue had to offer we met with Francois. He was super friendly, inviting, and informative. He met with us and told us everything that the hotel had to offer us for our big day, from the use of two conference rooms, providing tables, chairs, linens, plates, utensils, food, alcohol, even setting aside rooms for our out of town guests at a cheaper rate, etc. To say we picked the Westin Hotel was because of Francois is 95% of why we picked the space. He was such a pleasure to deal with throughout the whole planning process. However it wasn't just Francois who was part of our event team at the Westin. We also dealt with Angelica who drew up our contract and explained to u how everything would breakdown price wise. She too was super helpful, informative and accommodating. Then there was also Racquel who was in charge of the hotel room rentals. Anytime I had a question about which guests had booked rooms she was very quick to send a detailed spreadsheet with all the guests who had booked rooms. And last but not least we also had Stephan as part of the event team. We unfortunately didn't deal with him throughout the whole process but he was our point of contact for the entire weekend. He was really friendly, accommodating and a pleasure to work with. The morning after our wedding when we were tearing down all the decor and getting things ready to leave and got our last tier of cake back we sadly found out that our customized cake topper had been misplaced. We immediately let Stephan know and he got on to tracking it down immediately. As I write this unfortunately as I write this it has still not turned up but Stephan has assured us that he has sent out a memo to the entire Westin staff and have everyone keeping an eye open for it. Aside from the slight hiccup with our cake topper everything went off without a hitch. We would 1000% recommend using the Westin to any of our family and friends for...
