What can I say about my university days in Edmonton, the capitol city of Alberta?
Arriving Edmonton, Alberta, Canada from Hong Kong, I knew nothing about this city and place, except that I had been accepted by a school called Alberta Collage. Air Canada was on strike while I had to take a flight from Hong Kong to Taipei to San Francisco to Vancouver and then finally arriving Edmonton, all on waiting list. I lost my luggage during the hectic transit, and I knew nobody in Edmonton.
Yet those were the worst time, it turned out to be one the best time of my life. I got admitted to University of Alberta, and spent the next 5 years in the campus.
It was so wonderful! I met a lot of different students and people from all over all the world! I never heard about them but then I knew that there was the Ukrainian community, which is a big one in Edmonton. I also started to watch Canadian football, when Eskimos were one of the strongest team in the CFL. Then of course, there was the Edmonton OIlers, where hockey is being played on ice! The Oilers were the talk of the town, and with players like Gretzky, Messier, Anderson, Kurri, Coffey, Lowe when they became part of my University life, watching every games whenever possible on TV. I even got a chance to attend a Stanley Cup playoff game between the Oilers and their biggest rivalry Calgary Flames to make up what was known as the "Battle of Alberta" . Also, I was living in HUB, studying at the Rutherford Library, doing computer programs in Tory Building, and finishing at 4 AM, walking back to HUB at 40 below freezing temperature. I also got the opportunity to become a DJ in the campus multicultural radio station. All because of this wonderful University.
Thank you for the memory and wish UofA (and their Golden Bears team) well and continue to become the best of University in Canada and...
Read moreJust wanted to start off, it’s very sketchy recent reviews have got deleted that were explaining their negative experience at this hospital as well. Including mine. (which I have proof of)
Horrible. Got flown in here by plane from Fort Mac, for emergency services. I've arrived here around 10- 11AM, and was never checked up on by a nurse until 4PM. The nurse didn't even know what a pivot disk was (equipment that transfer a patient who cannot walk/stand on their own). Was given no food, so I had eaten nothing at all, all day and evening. My mother had to order me food. Had my testing done right in the waiting room of the emerg unit, and when came back with results I was told the calf area of my legs were "a bit too big" to detect anything because the nerves are deep so they showed up as techinals. And that they basically aren't gonna do more testing, just send me back to fort mac. Then, a nurse swapped my bed to a different area of the emerg unit where she left a bunch of garbage and dirt! Like a mouth swab on the floor, a cup that was split so there's water on the floor, and dirt and grime. Not only that, but there's also tiny black flies/fruit flies or something in this area. I feel disgusted and gross. I even got bitten by one. She also put all my personal belongings underneath my bed, an area I can't reach because I am unable to walk or stand. AND, this couple next to me has been trying to get the attention of the nurses, saying "excuse me" multiple times and have been ignored each time. Absolutely HORRIBLE and filthy place!
Edit: My mother hauled me out of there to go back to fort mac hospital, rather than waiting 24 plus hours for transportation from ambulance. They were quick to get me gone. However nurses did not assist with patient transfers. 3 security guards did,...
Read moreMy engineering and science profs were pretty good for the most part, but this place is very unfair about refunds, a little too capitalistic, and overly political.
I was enrolled for a second semester of EE for 4 days and they charged me $4K because i was one day late for the 100% refund. If any other company did this it would be considered fraudulent, but even the adjudication process just denied my refund request and said i should have understood the terms. I agree that you should understand the terms and conditions of enrolment, but considering i had just signed up for the courses 5 days ago and then had to withdraw for medical reasons, it seemed like a reasonable exception.
Additionally, I'm kind of pissed about the oscilloscope you have to buy for EE. It's a cheap (glorified Arduino), and they have these super nice analogue ones in the lab. Why not just use those rather than force us to buy a cheapO digital one for $500? This is one of those times i just think universities are way to capitalistically motivated (considering they are publicly funded maybe it shouldn't be about money). Text books are the same issue. Use libgen!
Additionally, these guys need to separate politics from education. You are forced to agree with certain political views to pass first year physics which is pretty pathetic. No university is a place where you can openly debate and discuss ideas anymore which is a very sad...
