Learn moreBrief Overview of High Park I've been to High Park many times but each time I bump into something new, discover yet another hidden corner or see a beautiful tree I never noticed before. Let me give you an idea just how large the park is: 399 acers. Yup, that's how big it is.
If you really want to see the many faces of High Park you need to go in spring when nature is wide awake and everything is in full bloom, you also need to go in the fall when golden leaves cover the ground as far as the eye can see and you need to go in the winter to see just how beautiful ice and snow can be. Don't always come during the busiest times; High Park is most peaceful and relaxing early in the morning and after twilight.
Around blooming season visit the park occassionally with a camera to take new pictures and post new info and updates.
The park is easily accessible by streetcar and subway (see directions). If you're in the area it's worth to take a walk around the park as the neighbouring streets are very nice with lots of mature trees and interesting house fronts. The arts and crafts shops and cafés on Bloor West are also within walking distance from the park.
High Park is operated by the City of Toronto and you don't have to pay an admission fee to visit it.
What can you do in Toronto's High Park? The short answer is that you can do pretty much everything that can be done in most large parks:) High Park's 399 acres in the middle of Toronto is an excellent getaway for children and adults of all ages. There are many designated children's playgrounds, sports facilities, 18 picnic areas, hiking trails, large green spaces, waterfront trails, benches galore and the list goes on and on.

Read moreHaving lived in High Park for over 20 years, visiting almost daily, I have witnessed the steady decline in the park’s care and maintenance by park management.
The popular trail bordering Grenadier Pond is completely neglected, often covered in thick mud, rendering much of it inaccessible if you don’t want your shoes and pants to be covered in mud.
And if you’re an elderly person walking with a cane or walker, or a family with small children or a stroller you can forget about enjoying a stroll along the pond. In winter the path is a skating rink of ice, making it dangerous for even an abled body person to walk on and in spring or anytime after a rainfall it’s a river of mud.
Management also neglects to clean up diseased Willow trees that have fallen over into the pond, leaving not only huge holes in the earth near the trail but also an eyesore in the water with trunk and leaves left to rot in the water.
Another huge issue is that Grenadier Pond is shrinking thanks to the invasive phragmites that have quickly proliferated. Having ignored the invasive growth for years, the phragmites took over large parts of the pond, effectively reducing the visible water significantly. They are now trying to deal with the massive overgrowth with methods that are too little too late.
The reviewer below who referred to High Park as Toronto’ s Central Park clearly hasn’t visited Central Park recently. That park is professionally managed, clean of debris and a total joy to visit. New Yorkers would stand for no less. Sadly we don’t have the same culture of advocacy to keep our politicians and civil servants working for us on their toes.
High Park Management, together with the City of Toronto, are dishonouring the legacy of John George Howard, the architect who created the park and in 1837 donated 400 Acres of pristine land to city so that it’s residents could enjoy it. Mr. Howard wouldn’t recognize the place today. And those - including the elderly and families - who would like to enjoy the park as Mr Howard...
