I love Mountain View Cemetery and I walk and run with my dogs on leash daily and remember those that have passed. Today at 8.45 am I was doing my usual walk on the public paths and I was blocked on by a staff member and abusive words were said to me and threatening body language. I could not see what he was doing until I was right up to him (he was placing a plaque on the wall) and there was no sign saying path closed.
I went to the office to share what happened as I was really upset and felt threatened. The General Manager greeted me and I explained what happened and he scoffed at me and said he is doing an "internment", it is an active cemetery and now you know you should just avoid staff as he was putting ashes to an enclosed place. He said lots of other condescending things. He would not listen or take on any of my suggestions. I said I did not know this was going on it would be really helpful to put up a sign to explain what is going on and close the pathway to protect staff and also educate the public. He just said there are general signs saying this is an active cemetery and staff are at work. I tried to explain again that when important work like an "internment" are going on the pathway should be closed. He also went on how people in general are disrespectful to the cemetery using it for recreation. I would like to point out the General Manager actively rents it out to movie productions - I think that is a lot more disrespectful than walking your dog daily in the cemetery to enjoy the day and pay your respect to all those that have passed.
A very very upsetting experience. I love the cemetery but and it is a very loved space in Vancouver to remember so many people who have fought for our country and loved ones. But the General Manager is very disrespectful that this is a public place and he has a delicate and important role to make sure the space is respected for those that have passed, protect his working staff and protect and educate the public. I would not chose to be buried or remembered at this cemetery with such a disrespectful General Manager in...
Read moreI grew up living right on Fraser Street at about where 34th Avenue would have been - if it had been a constructed road - right across from the Mountain View cemetery - the old cemetery office and works yard was located at 33rd Avenue and Fraser Street right near where we lived - the property was approximately an acre in size - the office was a huge old house - very well kept - it was torn down in the mid 1960's and an A&W was constructed on the Fraser Street side of the property - 5 houses were built on the Chester Street East side of the property - sadly when the old house was torn down a beautiful old Vancouver heritage home was destroyed - if it happened today that house would have been saved and on the Vancouver Historical Society preservation list - would be interesting to know the history of the property before it was used as the cemetery office - one thing the neighbours living there all agreed on - we had a lot of "quiet...
Read moreYesterday I witnessed a girl with long blonde hair, with a dog with a very long leash. She was jumping WITH the dog on top of several graves. The dog was also urinating and deficating on these graves. She did NOT clean it up. The dog ALSO was digging HOLES in these graves. She and dog desecrated these graves. It was disgusting what her and dog was doing. This was south of the Jewish section. She walked I think it was on 37th west. It's the walkway that is connected middle of cemetery. If anyone know or witness this person , she should be permanently banned from cemetery ,, given a large fine and also have her dog confiscated./taken away. City and management here should find her and have this reported to them. It was disgusting and despicable. It was disrespectful to the families of the loved ones...
