This restaurant houses two businesses, Vegan Fried Chick’UN and Dessert Directory, and it looks like they also carry some desserts from other suppliers (Vegan Pudding Co. was the one I noticed). I will be reviewing them together since they share one register and you can order items from both as one seamless experience. VFC specializes in fast food style vegan chicken (GF available) and DD carries a bunch of desserts including Cheesecake Factory Cheesecakes, an assortment of other sweets (cakes, cookies, bars) including vegan, GF, keto, and “regular” items, crepes and waffles, and smoothies/shakes. It’s just a counter service place but the environment is pleasant. I like what they’ve done with the decoration - there are plants around the dining area and cool hanging lights. Three picnic-style tables for dining in, a few small tables outside. I came here planning to get dinner from VFC and dessert from DD. I’d really wanted to try the VFC chicken tenders but they recently changed the menu so they no longer have a side salad (or any side with any nutritional content besides potato) and I didn’t want to eat just breaded tenders and dip for my whole meal, so I pivoted and got the Coleslaw Burger instead. The patty really tastes and feels like chicken which is cool, but it seemed like there was not much effort put into anything else. I’m not sure if the “coleslaw” even had cabbage or just coarsely chopped lettuce, and there was way too much sauce, which both drowned out the slaw and made everything slide around and off the bun. It’s just fast food, except it costs $13. I have a difficult time believing it costs $13 to produce this sandwich. Come here if you’re vegan/vegetarian or a meat-eater looking to be impressed by the fake chicken, or if you’re vegan and are willing to burn some cash to scratch the itch for fast food. Do not come if you’re looking for good vegan food. At least based on the burger. I wasn’t really impressed with my dessert either. I got a slice of Cheesecake Factory Reese’s Peanut Butter Cheesecake, and it just tasted like eating a big Reese’s cup: cheap chocolate and sugary peanut butter, I couldn’t really taste the tang of cream cheese. It wasn’t BAD, but not what I expected given the Cheesecake Factory hype. It was also sitting in a sunny spot while I ate my sandwich, so it’s possible it would have been better fresh out of the fridge. With the desserts, nothing is labelled except the keto items. It would really help to have labels since it’s not obvious from looking what all of the cheesecakes are and even the (presumably, given the online menu) vegan cakes are not labelled as such, so you would have no idea if you didn’t see the online menu. And seeing prices would also be helpful. Honestly I wanted to like the place and the tenders still appeal to me, so if it ends up being convenient, I may come back and give them a try along with a different dessert, but I have to say to say that the place as it is is confusing to me. Vegan Fried Chick’UN is selling lazy vegan fast food for “real” food prices, and the variety at Dessert Directory is impressive, but the pairing with VFC doesn’t make a ton of sense since the majority of DD’s stuff is not vegan, and VFC has no keto meal items to complement the...
Read moreI really wanted to love this place, but it fell a bit short. I came here to use my Plant Curious coupons, so ordered 2 vegan crepes (mango cream cheese and blueberry cream cheese), a gluten free classic pulled chick'un burger, and 3 chick'un tenders. There was only 1 lady working; she took the orders up front and prepared the food in the open kitchen space right behind the counter. We waited around 15 minutes for our order. When we went to pick up our food, one thing we did notice was that the staff member wasn't wearing gloves when handling the food, so we only trust that they were properly sanitizing in-between working up front and in the kitchen. She was friendly.
The chick'un tenders were the best part of the order. They had a crispy exterior and retained a meaty texture despite being vegan. The spices in the batter gave them a small kick of flavour. The crepes were disappointing, but because we got them at 2-for-1, it was fair for that price. We weren't sure if there was supposed to be more filling ("cream cheese") in-between the crepe folds, but it was primarily the fruit sauce on top that gave it flavour. The blueberry may have had a small amount of blueberry sauce inside, but there was no "cream cheese" to be found that we could see/taste. We were left wondering if it was mixed into the sauce. At a regular $10 each, we'd pass on this as it was otherwise a plain crepe with some sauce on top. The burger was decent and the vegan mayo and cheese options were appreciated. I only got the classic, so it was quite plain, but the chick'un had a soy-forward flavour that was passable as a meat substitute. The gluten free bun was one of the better buns I've had (fluffy and not flat).
The shop also sells different desserts (I'd assume made in house based on the packaging), and treats from other vendors and plant-based brands. Not everything is vegan, so I'd advise you to check the labels/menu and ask staff if you're unsure. If I was in the area, I'd recommend stopping by for the chick'un tenders or a treat as they're open late, but not...
Read moregood place! a coupon got us here for their burger, nuggets, and desserts. I researched and this place use to be non-vegan, serving sushi, burgers, then poke bowls...so it's safe to say they are now Vegan Fried Chick'UN instead of Simple Bites.
Please see their updated menu bec it has changed for sure. They serve vegan, keto, and normal desserts. The desserts are expensive BUT GOOOOD! got the Durian cake!!!!! and it's delicious moist and layered so I the Pinoy in me was YUMMMM! and my husband who is just learning about Durian seemed to now enjoy the small pleasures of durian flavours since the potent smell is only in a small dose.
We got the burgers and it was good. Sad to say I had a very very high expectations since we are vegetarians who like to explore vegan places and we had hoped their burgers were deluxe and awesome. The patty were good but I have eaten other places where it's better. I still their kind of patty cz it's near chicken flavour. The sause was good.
The sad part is that the other ingredients are sad. lettuce or the greens are only sprinkled on like a burger from MacDonald's. Tomatoes and other stuff were flimsy. I was sooo sad. sigh. I will try next time to order for more than just the patty inside. If anyone from the store reads this please add a bit more greens, tomatoes etc...cuz it really felt like it was lacking in substance bec the patty was there but nothing else was.
Next is the vegan nuggets. Tasted exactly like the chick'UN patty but only in small size. good frying style bec it wasn't soggy at all! so GOOD TO BUY THIS FOR A TREAT!!!! I liked it.
Last, the fries were a bit of a let down. soggy from the oil. It reminded me of me trying to mimic McD fries but me failing. so if they could only make their own potato fries instead of just buying the frozen pack and frying them I think it will add more value to their products...BUT that's just me.
IM STILL GONA GO BACK! I still have to taste their deserts and other burgers!! pls owner...give me more than a patty in the burger. I'm gonna tell my friends to...
