I regret to say that my family had the worst experience on this tour. The tour guide/driver desperately needs training on how to interact with individuals with disabilities. While we initially felt reassured knowing the tour operator is part of the Easter Seals Access 2 program, which offers complimentary support for individuals with disabilities, the treatment we received was far from inclusive or understanding.
My husband, two disabled sons, and I were on the tour when one of my sons, who has an invisible disability, became distressed. He began a vocal stim that was admittedly loud, disrupting the tour. I understand that it was disruptive, and I don't disagree with the need for us to get off the trolley. However, what I take issue with is the way the driver/guide handled the situation. Rather than showing compassion and understanding, the driver/guide made the situation worse by repeatedly telling us, "You have to get him under control," and, "I can't refund the money of all the other patrons because of him." This lack of empathy only increased our stress and hindered our ability to calm our son.
The driver's focus was on appeasing the other patrons rather than ensuring our son’s safety and well-being. He threatened to drop us off in an unfamiliar city, knowing that our son was in distress and could potentially run into traffic if we were forced off the trolley. If someone with a visible disability had a medical emergency or a patron suffered a heart attack, I doubt they would have been treated with the same lack of concern.
This experience took an emotional toll on our family. We were already aware of the disruption and did everything in our power to calm our son. We were also fully aware of the disapproving looks and comments from other passengers, who seemed to lack compassion for our son's situation. Instead of helping de-escalate the situation, the driver/guide’s behavior encouraged others to gang up on us, making it impossible to focus on our son.
The tour ended with us being dropped off near our rental car, but only after a harrowing experience and without any further assistance from the driver. We were left to fend for ourselves in an unfamiliar city with a child still in distress. The driver's lack of basic compassion and understanding was evident as he drove away without a second thought.
To the other patrons on the tour who judged us, shame on you. You don't know what it's like to be in our shoes or to parent a child with an invisible disability. Your lack of empathy and quick judgment only added to the trauma of this experience.
This was, without a doubt, one of the most distressing events we've ever endured. If you have a family member with a disability, I strongly advise you to avoid this tour company. They need serious training in inclusivity, mental health, and how to treat all individuals with the dignity and respect they deserve.
Final Thoughts: This experience was a stark reminder of how much work still needs to be done to educate and foster a truly inclusive environment. If this company continues to advertise under the Access 2 program, I hope they take steps to train their staff appropriately to prevent such incidents from...
Read moreWhat an evening of scary tales, spooky storytelling and lots of haunted history of our city! My coworker and I went on the Haunted Winnipeg Trolley tour yesterday. We both had a fantastic evening out!
The tour sells out quick; so it is best to book early! The website is clear to use and provides an excellent description of the tour. The tour operates on both Saturdays and Thursdays. We both liked the option of a weekday tour. The tour starts at 1930 until 2215. The price is approrpiate to the guided tour and length.
The trolley is clean, has air conditioning or heat and dated perfectly. Our trolly bus driver was friendly and drove safely throughout. Our tour guide was a truly dyanmic detailed historian and storyteller!
We loved taking a step back in time and feeling the spooky energy at the the Dalanvert Museum, Seven Oaks House and the famous room 202 at the Fort Gary Hotel.
Two suggestions we have is an earlier start time; as it is a lengthy tour and goes quite late. We also would love to have an opportunity to offer a tip to the driver and guide.
We highly recommend this trolley tour. Beware you're in...
Read moreWe had such a great experience with the Winnipeg Trolley Company! Even though we’re from just outside the city, we still learned so many new and interesting facts about Winnipeg that we had never heard before. Our tour guide and driver were both fantastic — knowledgeable, engaging, and really fun.
The only thing to note is that the trolley seats aren’t the most comfortable, so after two and a half hours you might find yourself shifting around a little. But honestly, that was a very small thing compared to how much we enjoyed the whole tour. We came away with a new appreciation for our city and had a great...
