Book via wechat 7 days in advance otherwise you won't get tickets at all, this place is very popular with the locals too. Recommend to start from the exhibition at the basement, where they exhibit in accordance with the history/dynasty line of China. Incredible bronze and other artfacts items from more than 3000years ago are just presented right in front of your eyes... I m total overwhelmed... better to search for information of items that you might interested to witness before hand otherwise you might be bombarded with artifacts while lost in information/translation. There is a dining area on the basement floor, but possibly due to exihibition-safty concern only cold/dry food (like cold noodles in sesame sauce) was offered, so maybe you can pack your own sandwiches or snacks to eat inside canteen area. Visiting time for us was 4-5hours FYI.

Worth the waiting to get through security. As the museum is in same area as Tiennamen Square and The Forbidden Palace, it may be worth going on week days rather than the weekend. A huge place with so much history to explore. Took me about 5 hours to slowly and carefully explore level 1 and level 2. Signage was mostly in both Chinese and English. They had run out of museum maps and audio tours when I arrived so had to make do with display signage. Not many places to sit while working through the displays. Being a little older I did find that a real issue. Unfortunately I didn't get to level 3. Well worth the effort to have a good long look 😊

A huge sprawling museum with loads or Chinese and international artifacts. It's a modern and spacious layout with loads to see, you'll want to get there early in the day to be able to enjoy the all exhibits at a relaxed pace. The museum is free but you will need to book tickets via WeChat, as entries are managed to prevent overcrowding. Make sure to bring some water if it's hot, as the queues can be quite loong even with a timeslot booked. For tourists like myself, have your passport handy as you'll need it for ID when getting in, also note that upon entry everyone gets a quick bag search and scan for security.

This museum on Tiananmen Square measures 2.07 million square feet—surpassing New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art’s 2 million square feet—and reopened in 2011 after a decade-long renovation. It presents 5,000 years of Chinese history, as approved by the Ministry of Culture. (In other words, don’t expect much on the Great Leap Forward.) Artifacts include ancient Chinese Buddhist sculptures, a cowboy hat Deng Xiaoping wore on a visit to the U.S., and glazed pottery from the Tang dynasty. The museum also hosts temporary shows on subjects ranging from Leo Tolstoy to African art.

We went here in Feb 2016, It was really interesting when you got into the museum. once you have got past all the security checks and queues. when you get into the part to purchase your tickets, if your a visitor GO RIGHT, if you go opposite, you will experience a fate worst than hell. It is a free for all and no sense of what queueing is, it is utter bedlam. You can purchase food in the museum and drinks, you can also purchase gifts at the gift shop, you can probably buy them cheaper outside, but the quality is better in the museum. Free entrance for foreigner. Cannot bring selfie stick. Security very tight. Close on Monday, daily open till 4.30pm. Place very huge with 3 levels and an underground level. There is plenty of stalls selling souvenir and a cafe and convenient stalls that sell drinks and snacks. Need to come early as need to go through security check to enter Tiananmen square first which has long queue during major festive season or weekend. The museum is located just in from of Tiananmen Gate behind the Chairman Mao mouseleum.
