"According to various historical records, Hong Kong had many names before the arrival of the British, one of them was 'Hung Heung Lo Kong' (紅香爐港, Red Incense Burner ☐ Harbour). One old story says: long time ago, one red incense burner flowed and landed on the beach in front of the Tin Hau (天后, goddess of the seafarers) Temple in E present Causeway Bay. The villagers believed it was the revelation of Tin Hau, so they 前 placed the incense burner in the temple to worship and called the harbour in front of it 'Hung Heung Lo Kong'. Later the name was used to identify the whole island. In the early 19th century, the Ching government once set up a military post with the name of 'Hung Heung Lo Shun' (紅香爐汛) on the north shore of the Hong Kong Island, the name, was further validated. When a late Ching political critic Wong To (王韜) stayed in Hong Kong, he in his essay 'A Brief Introduction to Hong Kong' (香港略論) called Hong Kong as 'Hung Heung Lo Fung'(紅香爐峰,Red Incense Burner Peak): '...though a tiny place, its names are complicated, it is called Hung Heung Lo Fung, is called Kwai 住 Tai Lo (裙帶路).....' Since then, the name 'Lo Fung' became widely known. Some literary writers gradually used this name to denote Victoria Peak. In recent years, Victoria Gap has been officially renamed 'Lo Fung' Gap...
