The Yuyuan Lantern Festival, held annually from New Year’s Day to the Lantern Festival, is always a highlight of the season. I’ve visited for three consecutive years: the Shan Hai Jing theme in 2023, the magnificent Dragon theme in 2024, and now the Snake theme in 2025. While this year’s display doesn’t quite match last year’s grandeur, it’s still absolutely worth visiting.

The 2025 Snake-themed lanterns are particularly impressive for their blend of traditional artistry and modern technology. One standout is the interactive tree installation, where the "leaves" light up and change colors in sync with musical rhythms – a truly unique and mesmerizing experience.

Tickets are reasonably priced at RMB 50 on weekdays and RMB 80 on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays. If you're planning to visit, do so soon, as it’s bound to get very crowded later. Whether you're a photography enthusiast or just looking for a festive outing, this is an event...

More of a forced suffering you have to endure in order to reach the entrance to Yu Gardens, the architecture is gorgeous and loved the koi and swan that inhabit this place. However, I had the misfortune of having to come here on a weekend (I wished to have come on a Friday, but the weather was awful), and like other people have said, it was jam packed to the brim of people that either just want to pass through and want to take photos. Visually nice, but a tad bit too crowded for my taste. At least the locals didn't throw trash into the water, it was very clean...

Famous Jiuqu Bridge, and nearby Yu Garden and the surrounding areas, where you spend hours to shop around. The place is usually crowded with visitors, even in the rainy day when we were there. The attraction at Yu and Jiuqu {Nine Bending} are beautiful ponds, halls and pavilion. You find famous Shanghai dumpling here, either eat dry or with soup, other food like steamed buns you must try as well, then you can shop for souvenirs, craft works, jewels at bargain price. The light up at night in the areas are even more attractive. A must visit place if you are...
