This is a wonderful park for a short walk through or a long visit, especially with children. It is a block away from either Yu Yuan or the Bund. It's a great spot for a short break in the middle of the downtown bustle with lots of shade and peaceful scenery.
In late September/early October it is Osmanthus season and this park is full of the beautiful smelling trees. In my experience it has the most and densest number of them close to central/ Bund area of Shanghai. I've tried describing the unique scent but words fall short - sweet nectarine/peaches doesn't capture half of it, the best description I've heard is: If dreams of paradise have a scent, this is it.
The land comprising the park has an interesting recent history and there are several nooks and areas that make exploring the park worthwhile. Our young children like coming here to walk in the bamboo area (a mini bamboo forest), run on the mini-path and climb the rocks on the south-east edge, run in the open area, and clamber about everywhere in between.
