Residing any historic district of Santa Marta, the gold museum shows the incredible craftsmanship of the indigenous peoples of Colombia prior to the arrival of the Hispanic peoples. Many of the techniques employed by the indigenous peoples have now been lost, and seeing this level of craftsmanship from a period dating over 1,000 years ago is breathtaking. Everything from necklaces to earrings, crowns and earns are represented there. The building itself also has historic significance, and the history of Colombia as well as the architecture is worth seeing. Entrance to the museum is free, and there is absolutely no excuse that you should not visit it when you are in the city. Read moreOne of the better museums I have visited in Latin America. The English translations were complete, and with excellent grammar. The exhibits were well laid out, interesting, and professional. I especially enjoyed the indigenous carvings, along with the explanations of their significance.
The bottom floor talks about the geological and biological history of the area, and contains the exhibits of indigenous artefacts. Continuing upstairs, you learn the specific history of Santa Marta as a city, as well as the history of the building that the museum is contained within, which was surprisingly interesting!
