A very attractive church Basilica with great history. The Cathedral Basilica of Santa Marta is also known as the Whitewashed Cathedral and is the oldest cathedral in Santa Marta and one of the oldest in the country. It was completed in the late 18th century, around 1765 to 1794, and is considered the first basilica built in South America. It features Roman Renaissance style with Baroque details and an elegant neoclassical facade with white stucco, columns, and stained glass windows. It is located in the historic center of Santa Marta, at Plaza de La Cathedral. Historically, it is significant as the original resting place of Simón Bolívar, the liberator of several South American countries, whose remains were interred there from 1830 until they were moved to Caracas in 1842.

A very beautiful piece of colonial architecture, both outside and inside. I was amazed at the elegance. Maintenance is ok. Ventilation inside the church is good. Statutes are beautiful. Historically very important in not just Colombian, but also in Latin American, as the city is one of the oldest surviving cities in South America. If you are in Santa Marta, this is a must visit place. Be watchful of people asking for money.

Catedral Basilica de Santa Marta is right in the middle of the Centro Histórico. It feels a little sad inside, they don't turn any lights on, there's no candles etc, but it's still an impressive, historic and well-kept building. The plaza it sits on is historically significant too and a few little plaques around give some info in both Spanish and English.
