the Natural History Tour (approx 3 hours) at Curi-Cancha was hands down my favourite experience in all of Costa Rica. at the time of visit, there were 8am and 1pm tours daily for US$45 (incl. US$20 park entry). we booked this tour in advance with the reserve on WhatsApp (thanks for the advice Guadalupe!) and highly recommend it if you’re looking for an all-encompassing tour for flora and fauna found on the trails. not only did we luck out with our guide David Madrigal, an enthusiastic and knowledgeable naturalist with a specific interest in birds, but also essentially got a private tour since it was only two of us that morning. he brought a binoculars and a spotting scope, catering to our varied interests and questions about Costa Rica’s conservation efforts to the ethics of using bird call recordings (often misused and should be limited by the way to avoid changing bird behaviour btw), discovering everything from strangler figs, a resting side striped palm pit viper, to Motmots digging their nests, even taking unbelievably pro ‘Nat Geo’ shots on our phone cameras. we made a whole day out of it and re-entered after lunch nearby. natural regrowth has restored past pastures into the tropical cloud forest it is today; a stunning environment for nature walks, wildlife spotting (we were unbelievably lucky—keel-bill toucans, bungee caterpillar, wild pigs, armadillo, agouti, white-faced capuchins etc.) only occasionally running into other visitors. thanks a lot David and Curi-Cancha for your efforts, PURA VIDA 🌞

Our recent natural history tour in Costa Rica's cloud forest was an unforgettable experience, thanks in large part to our amazing guide, David. From the moment we started the tour, David's friendliness and passion for the wildlife around us were evident. His deep knowledge of the various species of birds and animals we encountered made the tour not only educational but also incredibly engaging. One of the highlights of the tour was spotting the stunning hummingbirds, the majestic quetzals, and even viper snakes. David's ability to provide fascinating facts about each species enhanced our appreciation for the incredible biodiversity of the cloud forest. His enthusiasm was contagious, and it was clear that he genuinely cared about sharing his love for the natural world with us. What truly impressed me was David's skill in helping us capture the beauty of the wildlife through our iPhone cameras. He expertly adjusted the telescope to align perfectly with our phones, allowing us to take stunning photos that we will cherish forever. Overall, David's guidance transformed our tour into a memorable adventure. His passion and knowledge about the wildlife in this beautiful country left us with a newfound appreciation for Costa Rica's rich biodiversity. I highly recommend this tour to anyone interested in exploring the wonders of the cloud forest.

Where do I start! This place is AMAZING! We asked for a guided tour and we had Jorge Alpizar Rodriguez as our guide. He was extremely knowledgable and had a background on herpetology, entomology, ornithology and botany. He knew most of the bird calls as well as their behaviors and was able to help us find the following birds: three wattled Bell bird, resplendent quetzal, Ruddy woodcreeper, northern barred woodcreeper, black breasted quail dove and the northern emerald toucanet. Since both my husband and I are entomologists it was refreshing to have a guide who also helped us find some insects that we had never seen before such as the two spotted tiger beetle, unidentified skipper butterfly and a cacoon of a moth that we had never seen before. He also gave us a fun talk about the native fruits of Costa Rica that made us laugh. You can tell the naturalists from this reserve really love what they do and they make sure to provide you a quality experience. Did I mention the tour was 3 hours long?! Yea it didn't feel like it because all the fun and adventure made the time fly by! Make sure to email the reserve in advance and make a reservation since they only let a few people a day and make sure to bring a copy of your passport too! They ask for a form of identification in order to enter the reserve. Highly recommend!

After an especially rainy night in Monteverde, we found out the Cloud Forest National Park was closed, but thankfully, Reserva Curi-Cancha was open! It's super close to the national park, so it was a perfect alternative for us. Tickets are $20 per person, and you can pay with either card or cash. Just a heads-up, they don't offer discounts for students or seniors—only for locals. This place is absolutely stunning! Even though it was lightly raining and we didn't see many animals, the park itself is worth the visit. We spent about 3 hours exploring various trails and came across a beautiful flower garden, a serene river trail, a waterfall, and even a labyrinth garden maze! It's like walking through the forest scenes from Taylor Swift’s folklore album cover. If you're in Monteverde and looking for a beautiful spot to connect with nature, I highly recommend checking out Reserva Curi-Cancha. The trails are well-marked and there's so much to see. Just remember to bring a rain jacket, just in case!

The trails are well marked and maintained. You don't need a guide, but I'd recommend it. The guides tend to all know each other and share locations of animals that have been spotted. Animals can be very hard to spot on your own and most guides have more information than you are likely to have on hand. The trails aren't enormously difficult. You'll want to wear sturdy close toe shoes with good traction on wet rocks. There are ants, spiders and other animals you'll want to keep your toes protected from. Remember this is an actual jungle. I don't recommend taking children under 12. There are bugs that bite, caterpillars that are venomous/sting , venomous snakes and countless other ways inattentive children may be hurt. The park hosts a wide number of animals and you'll definitively see wildlife of some kind. Overall, this is a fantastic park and I would visit it again if I had the opportunity.

My partner is a big birding fan and so we decided to go all in and do the 4.5 hour birdwatching tour. What an unforgettable experience that we were so lucky to be a part of! And worth every penny. Our guide David was AMAZING! So kind and helpful and knowledgeable about all the wildlife at the park. We were lucky enough to be the only people on the tour so we got to have a private walk through the reserve and it was stunning. Even the land itself without the tour would’ve been beautiful but being able to see 54 types of birds was an incredible experience. Our favourites were the hummingbirds, the roosting family of owls and the toucan and toucanette we saw. David helped us take videos and pictures through his scope and they look straight out of Nat Geo! What an amazing day and we thank David and everyone at Curi-Cancha for the best birdwatching tour we could’ve asked for!
