Paphos Market — Attraction in Paphos Municipality

Paphos Old Town is a short bus-ride up the hill from the Harbour. The bus costs €2 one-way. You get more breeze up the hill, so if you're sick of the heat at the beach, it's a decent diversion. The Market itself isn't great - there's lots of shops selling typical tourist-focussed goods - cheap jewellery, leather belts, bags, shoes etc., but between the various stalls and shops there are some nice cafes & restaurants where you can enjoy a lunch or snacks under trees. Whilst the Old Town doesn't have fantastic architecture, it does have some very interesting art, mainly on the gable ends of buildings - and there are a couple of art shops too, with better quality goods. From 7pm there are a couple of good indie bars - and the last bus back to the Harbour is after 11pm so there's plenty of time...

Paphos market certainly looks clean and has been refurbished very recently, this is definitely its strong point.

However, the shops in the market are the typical generic touristy plastic postcard shops. If you are in need of a postcard or some other items like that it is definitely a good place to be, but if you want something more local, handmade or any other interesting shops you might have to look elsewhere.

There is one embroidery shop which sells hand made embroidery from Cyprus, but they are sadly in the minority. Most of the stuff there is counterfeit clothes and fake perfumes.

The shopping streets and the cafes are however very nice, so if you are in need of a snack or a drink, you can definitely find something...

It's the market in Paphos Old Town so if you're in the Paphos area you might as well visit. Paphos was European City of Culture in 2017 and as a result, the area around the market was redeveloped, modernising the streets. I don't know whether the area had any old-world charm prior to that, but if it did, there's little evidence of it now. If you've experienced old markets in other European towns, you might be disappointed in Paphos; this is simply a tourist market, selling souvenirs many of which have been imported. It's been a tough couple of years for tourism in Cyprus, and this market clearly relies on tourists. So it feels a bit tired and quiet. That said, we did pick up some souvenirs before walking back down...
