Little reminds of this Spanish fort, Fuerte San Gil. The patron saint of the fort, Giles the Hermit, was a somewhat odd choice, as he generally protected people with disabilities and fearful children. Like many of the oldest European structures on Hispaniola, this fort was built between 1503 and 1510 to defend Ciudad Colonial. In 1887, erosion and stormy weather caused the original fort to fall into the sea. The current fort is a historical replica maintained by Alcaldía Distrito Nacional [National District Mayoral Office].

If you love beaches full of plastic and trash, Fuerte San Gil is your dream destination! This spot perfectly captures the trash culture of the city. Every wave brings a fresh layer of garbage, making it a haven for waste enthusiasts! Hope that there's gonna be an effort to stop and clean up all that mess soon. Until then, enjoy this unique garbage paradise! *This review can apply to all the beaches of Santo Domingo, and most streets...

Although I loved the place itself the Dominican government has not done a good job of cleaning it up is full of soda cans water bottles in general trash. I recommend you visit for its historic value but don't be shocked if you find all sorts of garbage and litter
