While in my early 20's, I visited the Presidential Palace in Quito and it was one of the most memorable experiences of my time in Ecuador. Even years later, I can still recall the sense of history and beauty within its walls.

The architecture alone is breathtaking, steeped in Spanish tradition and influence, yet distinctly Ecuadorian in character. As we walked through the halls, the guide shared stories of the nation’s independence and pointed out remarkable works of art, including murals crafted with ceramics that depict pivotal moments in Ecuador’s history. Seeing the official presidential flag and portraits of past leaders added to the sense of heritage and pride that this building represents.

The grand ballroom, the historic corridors, and the views from the terrace overlooking the heart of Quito all made the visit truly unforgettable. Beyond its political significance, the Presidential Palace feels like a living museum of Ecuador’s culture and resilience.

Ecuador is a country rich in history, vibrant culture, and warm hospitality, and this landmark captures it all in one place. If you ever have the opportunity to visit, I highly recommend it. It’s an experience that leaves you with a deep appreciation for the nation...

A modest part of Ecuador's history. The north side of Plaza de la Independencia is occupied by the modest-looking Palacio Carondelet, the seat of government and also Ecuador's presidential palace. The palace got its current appearance in the early 19th century, when Francisco Luis Héctor Barón de Carondelet had the palace renovated. The next most radical renovation took place in 1956 when President Camilo Ponce Enríquez had the palace demolished except for the facade and had a completely new reinforced concrete building built. On August 6, 1875, the bloodiest day in the history of this palace is when President Gabriel Garcia Moreno is assassinated here. More friendly is the changing of the guard of honour, but watch out for the formidable spears of...

The Government Palace, also known as Carondelet Palace, is located in the historic center of the city of Quito, capital of Ecuador. Its construction dates back to colonial times and was the seat of the Royal Audience of Quito. At present, it is the seat of the national Government and the residence of the President of the Republic. Certain areas of the Palace are open to tourists. In front of the Palace you can admire and enjoy the beautiful Plaza de la Independencia or Plaza Grande and its surroundings, as well as enjoy delicious dishes of Ecuadorian cuisine.

Great place to catch interesting scenes of political protests and such. There is a high police presence because of this. There are several cafes on each side of the plaza. Beware of pickpockets. The police will even warn "extranjeros" about this.
