This is the oldest and largest convent/friary in Quito and South America, dating back to the 16th century. It was founded and is still maintained today by Franciscan monks. The site includes a beautifully landscaped courtyard with a fountain, plus 3 churches and cloisters. The church sustained damage from earthquakes over the centuries, but is fully restored today. Photography is allowed on the grounds and of their stunning religious art collection. The church and altar can be photographed only from the choir, so that daily services aren't disrupted. The church is filled with statues of Franciscan saints and martyrs. There is also a massive painting celebrating notable Franciscan monks through the centuries. We visited the convent as part of a group tour, but you can...

The convent is located just next to the San Francisco church. You'll need to pay an entrance fee which is usually $3 for adults, kids enter free of charge. In here you'll be able to see a small museum with religious art pieces dating as far back as the 1500s. The newest addition is the mirage if you decide to climb the stairs, there you'll have a great view of the Plaza and the downtown area. You can also visit the chorus of the church and take pictures...
