Read moreThis is a crazy museum visit more than a castle visit. You do see plenty of the castle in the process, but it's an odd heavily-modified castle (13-1800's) and hence is weird and inconsistent, rather than a classic medieval or fairytale castle. The museum's odd and rambling - castle and local history, very old documents and wax seals and locks, old furniture and tools and weapons, old art of the local area, an exhibition of castle architecture drawings, some sculpture, and then... a contemporary art gallery over several levels, which at the time of our visit had an exhibition of animators' drawings (we narrowly missed the Annecy animation festival) and various modern sculpture/installation pieces, in the incongruous castle tower setting. Finally, there is a separate (but included-in-ticket) museum building of local ecosystems (complete with aquarium), fishing/hunting, info on the lake and agricultural history. It's all worth a visit if you're in Annecy and have time - allow 3hrs to see it all - but nearby Montrottier is more of a...
