On a recent 3 week tour of France, we accomplished what we set out to do; sample cross section of French wines to learn if there are wines we truly enjoy. We love wine, and honestly have always preferred robust, rich and velvety red wines, and we enjoy many whites and rosés as well. They rarely seem to be Of French origin. We know price is not a consistently accurate indicator of weather or not a particular wine will enchant us. Therefore, we were excited to learn of Maison du Vin, just a few minutes from our Hotel on rue St Catherine in the city of Bordeaux. They offer a nice selection of vins rouge and blanc that can be sampled and otherwise purchased by the glass or bottle, from around the Bordeaux region, with examples of left and right bank wines, Medoc, St Emilion etc. We enjoyed a tasting of some particularly nice white wines, and some red wines that we found to be completely well suited to our palate. You can order some basic cheese and or charcuterie to accompany your wine selections, and the cost was very reasonable. They offer indoor and cafe style outdoor seating. On our lovely afternoon visit there wasn’t any outdoor seating available, so we tasted indoors. We were a bit surprised at what seemed to us anyway, quite a bit of out of character behavior of some patrons. Laying with bare feet all over the little couches, others playing a very long round of rummy and drinking water and with an unruly dog. All the while many others wanting to actually sample and enjoy the wines of Maison du Vin had to look on as the place was full. In any event, that isn’t a bad reflection on the Maison I suppose. We greatly enjoyed our Saturday visit so much we went back on Sunday only to discover it was closed on that day. Highly recommended.

A must go for any wine lover! The staff were extremely helpful in making suggestions; the wine list were commanded by some of the finest and exceptional wines for a higher price but most definitely worth it. There were cheaper alternatives which did not pull any punches either in terms of its flavour profile and quality. They knew their wines and to pair it well with the correct type of food, and they spoke pretty decent English too. As an actual wine professional; they were not lying to upsell or to trick tourists so it is a must go. Alongside the good wine, I had the deli board and the foie grass (order this if you're with someone else 2-3 people) the portion is really big. The deli board charcuterie is exceptionally delicious, the pork pate hit the spot. The chocolates were really small in portion size but they were fine artisanal chocolates so that was fine. Overall, I drank over 6 glasses of wines, two boards, one chocolate board all for less than 36 euros Inc tax and service charge!

IF YOU ARE TOURISTS AND CAN’T SPEAK FRENCH, DON’T GO Really really disappointed by the rude employees. Saw this bar is highly recommended by Google or local map, me and my friend was so anticipated to have a wine in this nice city. However, after we entered we were standing there for more than 10 mins, the employees were obviously saw us but choose to ignore us even they got nothing to do. So we made ourselves a seat and try our best to get their attention in order to get the wine list. As the comments in google map said we could ask the employee for the professional advice on wine. So we tried another 10 mins to try to get the attention for the advice. When the lady came, before we said anything she seems already so unimpressed and crossed her arm. Since my French is only good enough to able to ask “Excuse me, can you speak English?” So I have no choice and only can do the rest of the conversation in English, but the lady just being arm crossed and impatiently to response to our question. I was doing the whole conversation politely even waiting for 20 mins the employee came whom were free. Eventually wine and ambience were not bad, but really really ruined by the unprofessional employees.

The setting is beautiful with the stained glass, stunning tapestry, high ceilings with bottled shelves. The layout is also well considered so despite having many tables it is separated into sections so does not feel busy even when full. When we arrived it just after midday on a Monday it was quiet, but it soon got full. Initially there was only 2 staff working but he called for reinforcements and 3 more arrived soon after. This did mean had to wait a while for our 2 set of glasses but we could see they were working as fast as they could and he kept apologising. The pate and cheese board where well portioned and filling. The selection of wines means you can try the various regions with a mix of classes. The prices are unbelievable. €2-5 for most - and these are full 150ml sizes! A brilliant and economic way to spend an hour or 2 eating good food and wine.

This is the place to start your visit in Bordeaux. Waiters are super helpful and will provide you with plenty of information on different wines. It's the best place for wine tasting- just ask for half glasses so that you can try many, it's a normal practise there even though it's not written on the menu. (~5 per glass, so ~2,5 for a half of glass). The selection of wines is just amazing!!! Every wine we tried was very special! I was about to come back there to try more wine but unfortunately didn't manage, so now I can not wait to visit Bordeaux again and go to this place. The interior of the place is another story-it's magnificent. I strongly recommend this place either if you just want to drink some amazing wine or if you don't know how to start on your wine journey 😁

Heard recommendation to visit from everyone. However. I’m heartbroken by my overall experience. Took me 40 min to first interact with the staff after I’ve seated down, and this interaction was me asking to seat at the bar (maybe we’ll be faster). Seated at the bar more 15 minutes, and my wife asked the attendant if she could order, the reply was “let me finish this and will attend you”, she finished to pour the wine in the glasses and started to make her wine tasting ritual. Finally we were able to order the wine, there was no interaction of which wine we prefer, which taste profile we love etc, no recommendation, nothing... Really heartbroken by this awful, awful experience.
