Em setembro de 2024, passamos por acaso em Castellane, vindos de Lyon a caminho da Toscana. Programei o Google Maps para fazer o trajeto sem pedágios, justamente para passar pelas cidades do interior. Vimos esta igreja alguns quilómetros do alto de outra montanha por onde passa a estrada. A cidade se localiza no Parque Natural Regional de Verdon, sendo ponto de partida para caminhadas, rafting e canoagem nas gargantas do Rio Verdon, que formam o maior canyon da Europa. Cidade pequena, mas muito movimentada, com vários bares e restaurantes. Pensamos em nos hospedar, mas todos os hotéis estavam lotados. Planejamos voltar para subir até a igreja. Voltando da Toscana, cumprimos nossa promessa de voltar e subir até a igreja. Uma caminhada de média dificuldade. Do alto do penhasco, se avista a cidade e o rio e um horizonte muito amplo.

In September 2024, we happened to pass through Castellane, coming from Lyon on our way to Tuscany. I programmed Google Maps to make the route toll-free, precisely to pass through the inland towns. We saw this church a few kilometers from the top of another mountain where the road passes. The town is located in the Verdon Regional Natural Park and is a starting point for hiking, rafting, and canoeing in the gorges of the Verdon River, which form the largest canyon in Europe. It's a small but bustling town, with several bars and restaurants. We considered staying overnight, but all the hotels were full. We planned to return to climb up to the church. Returning from Tuscany, we kept our promise to return and climb up to the church. It's a moderately difficult hike. From the top of the cliff, you can see the town and the river, along with a vast horizon.

Le Roc au Serre und die Chapelle Notre-Dame du Roc in Castellane sind zwei eng miteinander verbundene, ikonische Wahrzeichen der Region Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur. Diese markanten Stätten ziehen nicht nur Pilger, sondern auch Touristen an, die die spektakuläre Landschaft und die spirituelle Bedeutung dieses Ortes erleben möchten.

Der Roc au Serre ist eine beeindruckende Felsformation, die über 180 Meter hoch über der Stadt Castellane aufragt.

Der Roc thront über dem Verdon-Tal und bietet einen atemberaubenden Blick auf die umliegende Region. Vom Gipfel aus können Besucher die ganze Stadt und die umliegenden Täler überblicken.

In der Vergangenheit bot der Roc der Stadt Castellane Schutz vor Eindringlingen. Seine strategische Lage machte ihn zu einem natürlichen Verteidigungsbollwerk. Überreste von Festungsanlagen aus dem Mittelalter finden sich noch heute am Roc, die auf die militärische Bedeutung des Ortes hinweisen.

Die Chapelle Notre-Dame du Roc ist eine kleine Wallfahrtskapelle, die auf dem Gipfel des Roc steht. Sie ist ein bedeutender Ort für religiöse Verehrung und symbolisiert Schutz und Trost für die Bewohner von Castellane.

Die Kapelle stammt aus dem 13. Jahrhundert und wurde im Laufe der Jahrhunderte mehrfach renoviert. Sie wurde erbaut, um die Jungfrau Maria zu ehren, die seit jeher als Schutzpatronin der Stadt verehrt wird. Die Kapelle war im Mittelalter auch ein Zufluchtsort für die Bewohner in Zeiten von Gefahr.

Die Kapelle ist das Ziel von Wallfahrten, besonders am 15. August, dem Tag der Himmelfahrt Marias. Pilger und Besucher machen sich auf den steilen Weg hinauf zum Roc, um die Kapelle zu besuchen und die Aussicht zu genießen.

Die Statue der Jungfrau Maria, die auf der Kapelle steht, soll die Stadt beschützen. Sie wurde sie 1944 von einem Blitz getroffen, aber später wiederhergestellt. Diese Statue ist eines der zentralen religiösen Symbole von Castellane.

Neben ihrer religiösen Bedeutung bietet die Kapelle und der Roc eine spektakuläre Panoramasicht über das Verdon-Tal und die umliegende Natur. Der Aufstieg zur Kapelle ist zwar anspruchsvoll, aber die Aussicht und die spirituelle Ruhe machen den Besuch lohnenswert.

It is a small charming church on the top of the Roc mountain in the heart of Castallon village. From the first sight it seems like the mountain is too steep to climb, but indeed there are two not difficult at all trails, leading to the church and the panoramic viewpoint over the village. I took the Chemin du Croix (Christ Path) from the village center. To come back if you need to take another path, take right side on the crossing, it will lead you through the splendid view over the Notre Dame du Roc and the Old Tower. There is no accessible way to the church though, only hiking one. Inside of the church one will find lots of gratitudes from 18th century and till nowadays....
