Chain Tower — Attraction in La Rochelle

One of the three towers of La Rochelle worth exploring. Like the other two, The Saint Nicolas Tower and the Lantern Tower, its very minimal displays inside, and The Chain Tower is no exception. Having said that, its rich history makes up for its bareness. This tower is considered to be the main gateway to the port of La Rochelle as a massive chain was anchored from this tower and connected to the Tower of St Nicolas to close and open the entrance. However, the most interesting thing for me here is the museum dedicated to the migration between France and Canada, the so called "The New France". It's really worth visiting for all ages especially young children. Mind you, there's no lift access here so be prepared to climb the ancient stairway. It's smaller compared to Saint-Nicolas Tower but interesting nonetheless. The Chain Tower (Tour de la Chaîne) is a famous landmark in the city of La Rochelle, France. It is one of the two towers that guard the entrance to the city's old harbor, along with the Saint-Nicolas Tower.

Constructed in the 14th century, the Chain Tower gets its name from the massive iron chain that was once used to block the harbor entrance, protecting the city from potential invasions. The tower stands at about 34 meters (112 feet) tall and has a distinctive cylindrical shape.

La Tour de la Chaîne moins connue que son orgueilleuse voisine la Tour Saint-Nicolas, est néanmoins un des deux édifices emblématiques de La Rochelle. Comme son nom l'indique,c'est depuis cette tour que l'on manœuvrait une grosse chaîne permettant de fermer l'entrée du port entre les deux tours,au 14ème siècle. Cette chaîne est encore visible au pied de la tour. L'aspect de la tour a été plusieurs fois remanié au cours de son histoire. Visitable,on découvre sa grande salle avec son plancher en étoile et ses alcôves.Une salle suspendue apporte une touche contemporaine à l’édifice.Des expositions sont programmées toute l’année.
