Colonne de la Déesse — Attraction in Lille

Visiting the Colonne de la Déesse was one of the highlights of my trip to Lille. Despite the crowds, the area felt incredibly peaceful and well maintained. The monument itself is stunning—steeped in history and beautifully set in the vibrant Grand Place.

The bronze statue La Déesse dates from 1845 and presents a protective goddess. The column commemorates the resistance that the city offered to the Austrians who besieged the city in 1792. The statue was given a unique and honorable position, namely in the place de Géneral de Gaulle, the most beautiful location in the city. Van boven op haar zuil , midden op de grote markt , herdenkt dit standbeeld "La Déesse " ( De Godin) een belangrijke gebeurtenis uit de lokale geschiedenis : het beleg van Lille door de Oostenrijkers , in september 1792.

In haar rechterhand houdt de Godin een " lontstok " , die dient om de lont van kanonnen aan te steken. Met haar linkerhand wijst ze naar de inscriptie die op de voet van de zuil is gegraveerd : het dappere antwoord van de burgemeester van Lille , André , die weigert zijn belegerde stad uit handen te geven. Daarom vaardigt de Nationale Conventie een decreet uit waarmee wordt beklemtoond dat " Lille wel degelijk van het vaderland heeft geërfd"
