Walk, as I did, from the promenade up the steps and steep paths to the not very impressive remains of the castle on the hill, then descend to the north and you come across the Cimitiere du Chateau hidden behind high walls. The entrance opens to green lawns, flower beds and a view of the pretty chapel and its bell tower rising above the cypress trees. The cemetery is terraced into the hillside, each level opening up new vistas of the surrounding country. There are some grand mausoleums and tombs encrusted in winged angels. One has an angel with cupped ear listening for sounds as a pair of hands lifts the lid from within! (see photo). Thunder echoing through the hills provided a spooky soundtrack. It's a very large cemetery with a sizable Jewish cemetery alongside but a couple of hours here admiring the sculptuary and enjoying the peace and solitude is...

It's hard to miss this place from the many vantage points in Nice.

There is a steep climb up many many stairs to reach this impressive and ancient cemetary.

There are many impressive statues and sites dedicated to those who are no longer of this earth and a moving cemetary next door dedicated to Jewish people.

I was a little disappointed that we couldn't enter the chapel... I thought it would be open, but it appears after reading other reviews, no one shows any pictures of the inside.

A beautiful place that is well worth the visit if this is your vibe. The gardens outside the Jewish cemetary in particular are stunning and the ivy covered...

Cimetière du Château is a cemetery located on Colline du Château (“Castle Hill”) in Nice overlooking the city, the waterfront and the sea. Established in the late 18th century, there are approximately three thousand graves. The views are stunning and the statues honoring the deceased and the mausoleums are also worth admiring. Amongst those buried in the cemetery are famous politicians, journalists, authors, jewelers, dancers and more. Highly recommend a visit.
