Visited on a Sunday morning. Lively market, highly recommended especially for the grilled chicken, pies, and macchiato from the mobile coffee shop.
The Notre-Dame Market in Versailles (Marché Notre-Dame) is one of the most vibrant and historic markets in the Île-de-France region. Located just a short walk from the Palace of Versailles, it dates back to the time of King Louis XIV, who established it in the late 17th century to serve the growing population of the new royal city. Today, it continues to be a beloved local hub for fresh produce, artisanal products, and a taste of authentic French market culture.
Set in a charming square with arcaded buildings, the market consists of both indoor and outdoor sections. Inside the covered halls, you'll find a wide range of goods—from fresh cheeses, meats, seafood, and baked goods to fine wines and prepared dishes. Outside, colorful stalls are filled with fruits, vegetables, flowers, and local specialties. The market is busiest on Tuesdays, Fridays, and especially Sundays, when it becomes a lively gathering place for locals and tourists alike.
Beyond shopping, the Notre-Dame Market offers a cultural experience. The friendly vendors, the smell of fresh bread and herbs, and the bustle of people create a true French atmosphere. It's also a great place to pick up picnic supplies before visiting the Palace gardens or simply to enjoy a leisurely morning exploring Versailles like a local.

The majority of the people shopping here were locals, which is both cool and intimidating. Our weak French made it challenging at times, but the vendors were quite friendly.
We had a lot of trouble finding picnic foods here. There's a lot of uncooked meats and pastas, or foods in quantities that are too large for a picnic. This is more of a complaint for the tour guide who brought us here to find food for our picnic lunch at Versailles, but it's something others should be aware of.

We ate at Rôtisseur & Traiteur, one of the food vendors inside the market. The food was absolutely delicious — full of flavor, fresh, and perfectly prepared. The service was also very friendly and welcoming, which made the experience even better.
The market itself is charming, vibrant, and full of local flavors. It’s a great place to explore and eat like a local. Definitely recommend stopping here if you're...
