Leipzig Zoo is one of the oldest and most renowned zoological gardens in Germany, located in the city of Leipzig, Saxony. It was founded in 1878, and today it is home to more than 900 species of animals from around the world, making it one of the most diverse and comprehensive zoos in Europe. The zoo is spread over an area of 27 hectares, and it attracts millions of visitors every year.
One of the main attractions of Leipzig Zoo is its famous Gondwanaland, which is an indoor tropical rainforest that covers an area of 16,000 square meters. It is the largest indoor rainforest in the world, and it features a huge variety of exotic plants and animals, including monkeys, birds, reptiles, and fish. Visitors can explore the different levels of the rainforest, including a canopy walk, and see the animals up close in their natural habitats.
Apart from Gondwanaland, Leipzig Zoo is home to many other fascinating exhibits, such as the African Savannah, where visitors can see elephants, giraffes, zebras, and lions roaming in a natural habitat. The Pongoland exhibit is also a must-visit, featuring a large family of gorillas, chimpanzees, and orangutans in a naturalistic setting.
Leipzig Zoo also has an impressive collection of big cats, including tigers, lions, leopards, and jaguars, housed in spacious and well-designed enclosures. Visitors can watch these magnificent creatures lounging, playing, and hunting in a safe environment.
In addition to the animal exhibits, Leipzig Zoo also has a botanical garden with over 6,000 species of plants, including tropical and subtropical species. The zoo also offers various educational programs, guided tours, and special events throughout the year, making it an excellent destination for families, school groups, and animal lovers of all ages.
Overall, Leipzig Zoo is an outstanding zoological garden, providing visitors with a unique and memorable experience. With its diverse range of animals and exhibits, it is sure to impress and entertain visitors from all...
Read moreThe zoo is amazing, and we will definitely come back. However, we had the worst service experience with food and an employee inside the zoo, between sections 40 and 41, after Pangoland. Do not stop there for food!
First of all, we ordered food for more than 25 euros – overpriced, horrible junk food. Lumpy porridge, cold fries, and a disgusting sausage with an overly fried skin. The woman with red hair at the cash register is most likely anti-social, with sociopathic tendencies. I have never experienced anything like this from a woman, so as management, I would actually look into her.
I ordered our food and asked her to give us 100 ml of warm water from the coffee machine for my baby, so I could prepare her milk and feed her. She refused, saying she couldn’t do it for sanitary reasons. I asked her to give me the water of course in a cup, not in my baby’s bottle. She then said she could only give it to me for 3 euros, as it would count as tea from the menu. I told her I didn’t want tea, I just needed it for my hungry baby, in a 30 degree heat, and she completely refused to serve me unless I paid 3 euros for the 100 ml of warm water. This, after we had already ordered and paid for the junk food.
I told her I would leave a bad review, as providing warm water for a baby is part of normal service in a restaurant, and she refused to help me feed my child. I complained to the zoo, and the people there already knew about this woman – I’m not the first to complain. This person does not belong in customer service.
It’s a shame I didn’t know that if we had walked a bit further, to the Africa section, we would have encountered a completely different experience: great food with healthy options, helpful personnel who assisted me with feeding my baby, and a beautiful restaurant with a great view.
But, one star nonetheless – this kind of treatment is unacceptable in such a high end place, or...
Read moreThe Leipzig Zoo is the best zoo I have ever visited, certainly better than the Berlin Zoo or San Diego Zoo in California. I visited the zoo in late June on a weekday morning. One should buy advance online ticket to avoid waiting in line purchasing the ticket. The zoo is big, both in terms of the area size and numbers of animals, as well as the types of eco system it showcases. One can easily spend over 4-5 hours if you plan to see all 5 areas of the zoo. The zoo is conveniently located in the city center, and easily reachable with public transportation. In each of the 5 areas, there are restaurant options and resting areas with bathrooms and gift shops, in additional, few big playgrounds. The two highlights of the zoo I enjoyed the most is the giraffe cafe, where one can find a cafe with seatings next to the areas where giraffe and zebras live. The other highlight is the indoor rain forest (second largest in the world), one can explore various plants and animals from rain forests all over the world there. And there is a 13 minutes long boat ride within the rain forest. The ride costs 2 Euro and it's cash only. The first ride starts at 10 AM. There is also a free wifi within the zoo area. The staff is overall welcoming. Enjoyed the feeding time talk outside of the elephant temple. One thing I might suggest is that I would love to know more about zoo's efforts in public education of various eco systems and in supporting researches on eco systems and wildlife...
