Wilhelma is a zoological-botanical garden in Stuttgart in the Bad Cannstatt district in the north of the city on the grounds of a historic castle. Wilhelma Zoo is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Baden-Württemberg, seeing more than 2 million visitors annually. The Zoo and Botanical Garden have been staffed since 1846. The Moorish Revival style echoing the Alhambra have been maintained and supplemented since 1960. Today, the zoo has an area of about 30 hectares (0.30 km2), houses around 11,500 animals from around the world composed of roughly 1,200 species and roughly 6000 plants from all climates. Of Germany's zoos, Wilhelma's collection ranks second to the Berlin Zoological Garden. In addition to the public garden, Wilhelma also has a branch office located in Fellbach, where the zoo keeps its stallions. Wilhelma receives gorilla juveniles rejected by their mother and reared by the zookeepers. At age 2-3, the gorillas are sent back to their original zoo(s). In 1829, the property the zoo stood near the mineral springs on the Castle Rosenstein estate. Then Duke William I of Württemberg decided to build a royal bathhouse in the gardens. The Duke decided that the bathhouse should be built in the Moorish style in the same fashion as the Alhambra in the Spanish province of Granada, with an attached Orangery. Unfortunately, construction ground to a halt in 1816 due to economic woes caused by the Year Without Summer, so Wilhelma became just another summer residence of the Dukes and later Kings of Württemberg. Ludwig von Zanth was hired in 1837 to design and construct the Duke's bathhouse.

The Wilhelma is a very nice ZOO, a lot of animals, and a nice place with beautiful buildings and flora and fauna, the staff is nice as well. It is a good place to get educated about animals, and since it is possible to see the real animals, its a diffrent better feeling than watching movies or pictures. The animals are well fed and look healthy and some are even saved by the ZOO, which I find very nice. Importent note: dont tap on glass from animals, dont use a camera flash for photographing, since its irritating animals, other guests and doesnt make better pictures. I would advice to not stick the hands near the animals ofer a fence, since they could bite. And I would not advice to try to feed the animals, since the already look well fed by the staff feeding and caring for them. Overall, I think ZOOs are very important, since they can help educate about animals and plants, most people could never see. The Wilhelma has a lot of small playgrounds for small children and restaurants for food and drinks as well. Overall, the ticket was worth its money for me. and The Wilhelma is a very nice ZOO in my opinion.

November towards the rest of winter is definitely not the best time to visit the zoo. A lot of areas were under construction and a lot of animals didn't seem to be in their places. It was especially disappointing not being able to see the white leopard at all. Regardless, it still looked like a great zoo, both for visitors and the animals themselves. It would have been great if there were more English signs and brochures on-site, and if their suggested paths were easier to follow in person. We tried following the full path, but ended up getting lost due to lack of obvious signs and confusing surroundings. There were also no restaurants open during our visit, and it was an absolute bummer not having the choice to eat inside and stay longer to walk around the huge park. I think there definitely should be at least one that is open at all times, even if it's just a small kiosk or a convenience store with only packed/preserved foods available.

This large zoo and botanical garden offers a wide variety that will satisfy visitors of all ages. In addition to exotic and local animals, there are also large and well-maintained plant collections. You can see a wide range of animals, including lions, giraffes, gorillas, and various bird species. It is particularly impressive for those interested in plants. The tropical greenhouses, vibrant flowers, and captivating atmosphere are a highlight. Wilhelma’s historic buildings and elegant architecture add extra charm to the park. There are also several playgrounds throughout the park for children. Special areas like aquarium, terrarium, and Amazon rainforest plants close one hour before the park’s closing time. In October, the park closed at 6:30 PM. You can easily spend 2-3 hours here. Entry is ticketed, and the park has its own paid parking. If you're visiting Stuttgart, this is definitely a must-see place.
