The Lisicrates Monument is a fascinating and beautifully preserved piece of ancient Athens, conveniently located near the lively Plaka district. This small yet striking monument was erected in the 4th century BCE by the choregos Lisicrates to commemorate a victory in a theatrical competition. Its elegant Corinthian columns and intricate friezes make it one of the earliest surviving examples of this architectural style.

What makes the Lisicrates Monument especially appealing is that it is free to visit, making it a perfect quick stop while exploring the heart of Athens without worrying about admission fees. It’s easy to find, nestled along a busy pedestrian street, and offers a unique contrast to the bustling city life around it.

The monument’s rich history and artistic detail provide a glimpse into ancient Greek culture and their love for theater and celebrations. Nearby plaques provide useful information for visitors wanting to learn more about its background and significance.

While small in size, the monument’s charm and location make it an ideal photo opportunity and a peaceful spot to pause during your Athens walk. It’s especially recommended for history enthusiasts and those interested in ancient architecture.

Whether you’re on a tight schedule or enjoying a leisurely stroll, the Lisicrates Monument is a must-see hidden gem that brings a touch of classical elegance to your...

In the area of Plaka, on the wñest side of the ancient Street of Tripodon, is this impressive cylindrical Choragic Monument 6.50 meters high, built on a square plinth of porolite, with six Corinthian style columns of Pentelic marble. It has a frieze with scenes from the life of Dionysus. It was built by Lysikrates in 335-334 BC. in order to support and display the bronze tripod given to him as a prize for winning the musical performances at the Theater of Dionysos, of which he was a sponsor. In ancient times, the sponsors were wealthy Athenians who undertook the expenses of holding dance and theater competitions and when they won the competitions, they were rewarded by the city with a bronze or gold-plated tripod. They built sponsorship monuments dedicated to Dionysus and placed their prize, the tripod, on top of them. Tripodon Street got its name from the placement of these tripods on the right and left of the street. It is the best preserved example of a choragic monument. It is the center of interest of the homonymous square. It has a very fascinating history. For this reason I give 5 stars. Nice environment, many restaurants, cafes, shops and a view of...

The Lysikrates Monument is the most famous Khoregos monument in Athens. It was built by Lysikrates around 330 BC. Choir exhibited in 344 to commemorate his victory. The monument stands on a 2 meter high rectangular base, approx. It is a slender, cylindrical small circular building 5 meters high, the spaces between its six Corinthian half-columns are covered with marble slabs. The 25-centimeter-high frieze depicts the adventure of Dionysus with the Etruscan pirates, whom the god turned into dolphins as punishment because they wanted to rob him. On the richly carved marble acanthus ornament visible at the top of the monument, three three-legged bronze tripods once stood, which, according to the inscription on the architrave, was won by "Khoregos Lysikrates, son of Lysithides".
