I recently had the pleasure of dining at O Thanasis for lunch, and I must say, the experience exceeded my expectations. The restaurant served up a delightful array of flavors and generous portions that left me thoroughly satisfied. Here's what I ordered: - Green Salad: A vibrant and fresh salad, featuring a wonderful mix of greens, succulent tomatoes, and cheese. The large portion could easily serve as a meal for two or be shared among four as a side dish. - Yogurtlu Kebab: Absolutely divine! The rich and flavorful dish featured tender, perfectly cooked meat, velvety yogurt, and surprisingly aromatic slices of sujuk on top. The generous portion could easily feed two moderately hungry diners. The atmosphere at O Thanasis was warm and welcoming. Although the restaurant wasn't busy during my visit, the waiter, Mario, was amiable and engaging. As a solo traveler, I appreciated the friendly conversation and even ran and got me coffee when asked (I had not idea they were running somewhere else when I ordered they just did it). The tables were set with salt and red pepper, a charming departure from the typical black pepper found in the States. The food smelled so good I forgot to snap a photo before I dove in! A rare moment for me. While the Wi-Fi was free, I couldn't quite get it working during my visit. However, I was happily distracted by the delicious food and my plans to explore the city. I'm confident the helpful staff would be able to assist with any technical difficulties. Disclaimer: For my reviews, I use a 1 to 5 rating scale, with 4 out of 5 indicating a great meal and service. I reserve a 5 out of 5 for those exceptional moments when everything surpasses expectations and can be considered truly premium.

Found the place on reddit after looking for good gyros in Greece. Did not disappoint! After walking 15 min from the Acropolis and sitting down in what felt like a super fast paced restaurant, I ended up having one of the most fulfilling solo meals I have had. Ordered the Thanasis Kebab and a Pint of kayzer (see picture, sorry for bad quality). Paid 12 and 4 respectively (total 16€). Once I sat down it took some time to get attended as you would imagine because the restaurant is super busy, after ordering some minutes later an old man sat next to me with a notebook and was talking to one of the employees and taking notes. He had a kitchen cover (delantal) so I thought he was just sort of like head of kitchen. After trying to pick up conversation with him, and having a waiter translate for us (english-greek) it turned out that his name was Thanasis and he is the owner of the place. Founded in 1964 you can see a picture of him from back then when he was 22 years old in the front part of the menu. I asked for a picture and he agreed. Shared with you below. Something about the aura of the place, fast paced showed all the work that must have gone behind to building this into what appears to be one of the best places to have a quick meal in Greece. Eferesto Thanasis!!!

When your hotel host gives you a food recommendation, you should take notice, and I was glad I did. This restaurant was very popular, with plenty of outdoor seats around the square. When I saw the notice that the restaurant was the no 42 tastiest in the world, I knew I would welcome the challenge. We ordered Saganaki, and it was divine. Back home, Saganaki would be drenched in brandy and flambeed for you, but here the humble grilled cheese came with a wedge of lemon, and it was more than enough. Only in Greece that you could eat a plate of cheese and found that it was the best meal ever. Definitely did not disappoint. The pork gyros platter was great, the pork shavings were tender and packed with flavours. Paired with the yoghurt dressing and red onion, every bite was an explosion in my mouth. But the winner was definitely the yoghurt kebab. The plate came with four kebabs covered with yoghurt based sauce. I honestly thought they ruined kebabs for me forever, as they're the best kebabs I've had for a long time. The yoghurt sauce and the juice from the kebabs would drench the pita bread underneath. They definitely earned their mark in the list. Worth a try if you're ever in the area!

Excellent food and even better service! We have eaten here for many years, since our Greek uncle brought our family here. Ever since it’s been our tradition to come here atleast once per visit (hopefully more than once!). I am from Texas and love meat, and I dream about this place. Sure, it’s touristy and caters to tourists. But the food is consistently great, the beer is ice cold on draft, kebabs are from the heavens, outdoor air conditioning and a remarkable reputation. If you like kebabs or gyros this should definitely be on your radar. The servers are so friendly I want to invite them to vacation in Texas!! The server with the Richie Rich tattoo is so excellent they should make him the boss!! Best service in Athens, as far as I am concerned. They are prompt, reliable and very accommodating. I’m not just saying this because they gave me some free beer either 😂. Overall I would recommend this place to family and friends. I cannot wait to return and will count the days. Thanks guys.

I DREAM OF GYRO! I ate here every single day of my 7 day trip to Athens! On our first day Aristotle (our waiter) saw two confused tourists and their toddler, standing outside the restaurant, unsure of seating etiquette and dining etiquette and he swiftly guided us in to a comfortable quiet table. He then explained at lunch everyone just pushes their way to grab an open table just as the previous diner finishes their meal. We were so grateful to have avoided that excercise and to just have someone look out for us. The food - where do I begin? The kebabs will destroy your world as they are so juicy and so succulent, I’m not sure how I will go back to North America and part with this food! Not to be missed the pork gyro, the beef kebab gyro and the beef kebab with yogurt. Their pita is the fluffiest!!!! The tomato sauce is so flavorful. The yogurt sauce is the literal icing on the cake! This meal is a 10/10! Do not miss this spot - however scary the crowds might feel.

This restaurant was recommended by my drum teacher, Thanasi, who now lives in Los Angeles. He hasn't been back in 21 years but the restaurant is still there. Thankfully, it was open on Easter Day (today). The whole experience of Greek Orthodox Easter has been amazing, and this dinner is my finale to an amazing stay in Athens and mainland Greece. I met a few great people and will be thanking them later. But back to this restaurant. I ordered the beef Soulvlaki with white wine. I don't know who made the wine or where it came from, but it made me tipsy after just one glass. They gave me a whole bottle. Not sure I'll finish before the morning, but a warning that it is strong. Wine doesn't usually hit me like that. I sat in the corridor so I could people watch. It was busy so I didn't get the fullest of attention, but that's ok because there were many other groups, and it was just me. If you are in Athens, Greece, I would recommend this place.
