Great archaeological and historical site with important ancient remains and with a lot of greenery that covers its largest area.Filopappou Hill is located to the south west of the Acropolis It is also know as the “Hill of the Muses” to whom it is dedicated. It is part of a large green area that also contains the “Pynx hill” and the “Hill of the Nymphs”.

At the top of the hill is the Filopappou Monument and his tomb, which was built by the Athenians in the 2nd Century AD, to honour the Roman consul and senator Gaius Julius Antiochus., who was known by the nickname Filopappos, that means “favourite grandson of his grandfather”. From there you can have great views of the Acropolis, the whole city of Athens and the Argosaronic Gulf. In addition to the ancient burial monument of Philopappos and the magnificent view, you can also admire sights such as the prison of Socrates , (the hill has many caves, including one legendary claimed to be the prison of Socrates before his death by hemlock), the Dora Stratou theater and the chapel of Agios Dimitrios Lumbardiaris. On the road leading to the Theater of Dora Stratou you will see an impressive monument, the Eptathronom (seven thrones plateau). Seven thrones carved on a rock, remains of a public square or assembly court. You can also see the "Kimonian tombs" which are located a little above the chapel of Lumbardiaris. An orthogonal opening in the face of the rock is the entrance to a twin burial monument, carved into the natural rock. The burial complex consists of two carved. urns of equal size. These tombs are accompanied by a legend that is the tomb of Olympian Kimon, father of Miltiades, and their relative, the historian Thucydides, who, according to the testimonies of Herodotus, Marcellinus and Plutarch, were buried opposite the Acropolis. The Ministry of Culture, however, states that the tomb is from the 3rd century AD. and belongs to some universally unknown Sosimianus. Another point of intere is the 'Deaf Man's Cave", excavated in 2009. Believed to have been originally used as a place of worship, then as homes, and later as tombs and burial monuments. The name hints at a local legend that the man who resided in this was deaf. This hill is the location used by Francesco Morosini, the Venetian general in charge of the battery of cannon that blew the roof off the Parthenon in 1687 This gem in the heart of the city is not only of great historical significance, but it is also one of the most beautiful outdoor places in Athens. The hill can be climbed from several sides and the walk up the hill will take 15 minutes. It's a...

Philopappos Hill is an absolute gem nestled in the heart of Athens. As an avid traveler, I am always on the lookout for unique and picturesque destinations, and Philopappos Hill exceeded all my expectations. This magnificent hill offers an unparalleled combination of natural beauty, historical significance, and stunning panoramic views.

The ascent to the top of Philopappos Hill was an adventure in itself. The winding paths, lined with lush greenery and blooming flowers, created a serene atmosphere that immediately transported me away from the bustling city below. Along the way, I encountered several ancient ruins and monuments, adding a touch of antiquity to the entire experience.

Once I reached the summit, I was rewarded with a breathtaking panorama of Athens. The Acropolis, with its iconic Parthenon, stood majestically in the distance, while the sprawling cityscape unfolded beneath me. The sight was nothing short of awe-inspiring, especially during sunset when the sky painted vibrant hues of orange and pink.

What impressed me the most about Philopappos Hill was its perfect blend of history and nature. The monument dedicated to Gaius Julius Antiochus Philopappos, a prince from the Roman era, stands proudly atop the hill. It serves as a reminder of the rich cultural heritage of Athens and adds an air of mystique to the surroundings.

I highly recommend exploring the various walking trails that crisscross the hill. Each path unveils new surprises, such as hidden caves and vantage points offering different perspectives of the city. It's an ideal place for a leisurely stroll, a picnic, or even a romantic rendezvous.

Whether you're a history enthusiast, a nature lover, or simply seeking tranquility amidst urban chaos, Philopappos Hill is an absolute must-visit. The captivating blend of ancient ruins, lush greenery, and panoramic views make it an unforgettable destination. I can't wait to return to this serene sanctuary and create more...

Philopappos Hill is an absolute treasure in Athens, offering a remarkable blend of history, nature, and breathtaking views. This serene oasis is a testament to the rich cultural heritage of Greece and a must-visit for anyone exploring the city.

The ascent to the hill is an enjoyable hike, with well-maintained paths that wind through lush greenery. As you make your way to the top, you'll encounter various ancient ruins and historical sites, including the Philopappos Monument itself, which stands as a majestic sentinel overlooking Athens.

The panoramic views from the summit are simply awe-inspiring. You'll be treated to a bird's-eye perspective of Athens, with iconic landmarks like the Acropolis and the Parthenon dominating the skyline. It's a photographer's dream come true, especially during sunset when the warm hues bathe the city in a magical light.

Beyond its natural and historical significance, Philopappos Hill offers a sense of tranquility that's a stark contrast to the bustling city below. Whether you're seeking a peaceful retreat, a place for a leisurely picnic, or simply a spot to take in the beauty of Athens, this hill delivers on all fronts.

I highly recommend taking the time to explore Philopappos Hill during your visit to Athens. It's a place where the past meets the present, and where the city's vibrant energy harmonizes with its ancient heritage.
