The Old Town of Kavala, known as Panagia, is a charming and historic district that offers visitors a unique glimpse into Greece's rich past. Nestled on a peninsula that juts into the Aegean Sea, Panagia is characterized by its narrow, cobblestone streets, traditional architecture, and stunning views of both the city and the harbor.
One of the most striking features of Panagia is its well-preserved Ottoman and Byzantine buildings, which give the area an authentic feel. The Imaret, an Ottoman-era complex that now functions as a luxury hotel, stands out as a symbol of the town's multicultural heritage. Visitors can also explore the Kavala Castle, perched atop the hill, offering panoramic views of the region. The castle itself is a reminder of the area's strategic importance throughout history.
Panagia is not just a historical district but also a vibrant neighborhood. Its small cafés, tavernas, and souvenir shops add to the lively atmosphere, making it a perfect spot for a leisurely stroll. The colorful houses, some of which date back to the 19th century, line the streets, creating a picturesque environment that invites exploration.
