I visited this lovely open air museum Lychnostatis on Sunday the 31st of July. It has so much to see and lots of little details, prepare for at least 1,5-2 hours to spend your time there. The entrance fee was 7 euros and you got a map and translations of text written in Greek in many languages, including Finnish. There's also a possibility for audio guide should you want one.
The bus stop is really close, just tell the staff in the bus that you're trying to get there, they'll know the right bus stop.
To be honest, it would be better to visit this mostly garden-like place earlier, maybe in May or June, or then at the harvest time later in autumn. Then you would see more of those beautiful plants they have there. But, it's worth a visit anytime, in my opinion.
It's not open on Saturdays and it's not open until late, so check the opening hours from the internet before you go.
There are toilets and a cafeteria. You can get drinks and food there as well as buy some local products, if you wish.
In the cafeteria they gave me freebies: the pears grown there. They weren't as sweet as the pears I've been eating but that was it for me because I'm not one for sweets. They were...
Read moreWe are absolutely fascinated by this amazing place! We have travelled all over the world, but we've never seen a place/museum like this; done with so much love, soul, attention to detail, projecting a whole vast history and cultural heritage of an island and its people in such a small, yet rich place. We are deeply touched and inspired by the initiative of the founder - Mr. Marakakis - to have created such an extraordinary and important monument of the heritage of his ancestors, and make sure it is passed onto generations of locals and visitors. This is patriotism at its very vest, something we should all worship and learn from. BRAVO! is the best thing we can say to the founder, to all the people who have helped and invested to build this place, and to all of those who keep preserving it. Good luck and keep going! And to all of you who haven't been her yet - PLEASE VISIT, YOU WILL LOVE IT! And make sure to get the audio guide as well, it was so informative and useful! You will need 2 hours for sure if you want to watch the documentary and observe everything in detail, which we definitely recommend. We can't wait to come here...
Read moreA very interesting and truly remarkable open air museum. A museum with a vision. It consists of carefully designed and constructed edifices and areas that house numerous very well preserved objects that present a historical picture of the life and the most important traditions of Crete and thus also preserves them for the future. At the same time, respect of nature and the environment, with creative sustainability as an important credo, gives the museum a topicality and urgency that inspires the visitor. Thus, the museum does not only present the history and environment of this very special place, but also of the philosophy of the collector and the makers of the museum, who have gathered and presented the objects and artefacts with such care and love that they can really tell their own story. It is perhaps the most moving museum I have ever visited. The museum is a true oasis...
