Kos Town is your typical Greek Town. Old harbour, Market area, cafĂ©s and restaurants. In the harbour boat trips are in your face. Best boat trip in Kos and cheapest. Shop around. Market is all for the tourist , lots of things you don't need. And then a little jem hits you. A shop different to the rest. As you walk by the cafĂ©s and restaurants you will be beckoned in with promises of best prices. The closer you are to the harbour the dearer it is. Beer offered as cheapest tastes like it too. If you like a named beer be prepared to pay anything from âŹ4/âŹ5. And size does matter you may only get a coke can size. Check first. There is a small Roman/Greek ruins to see 15 mins and you can be around the lot. Buses check time table carefully as not always do they stick to a schedule if bus is full they go. So get to stop in time and don't be bullied out by locals pushing you out of way. If you have food allergies check first as they are not always fully up on cross contamination. IE lots of things that are fried are all in the same oil, or hands that have just placed bread on your table, end up serving a salad to the next customer even if you have asked and told them you have a wheat allergy. They don't care they are not the ones who are going to be ill the next day. You can walk around Kos in about 2 hours because you have seen it all before elsewhere. If you take a leisurely time and sit drink eat. You can make a pleasant morning or afternoon. The back streets are not up to the standard of the tourist area with rubbish and unclean areas. Kos is worth a visit just plan the day you go, what you want to see. Most important plan your route back bus taxi...
Read moreKos Old Town is a beautiful place with i.e. the tree of Hippocrates, the ruins around town. Sadly it Steens that ruins has to be the headlines of the town as an earth quake two years ago has not really gotten fixed just yet. Here are some examples : the church above and close to the bazar is still ugly with a lot of material in front to keep people in a safe distance. The same goes for the 'bow'/gate in top of Bar Street close to restaurant Select. It had the most beautiful huge borgonvilia (sorry if I mispelled that) flower growing over it for 80years! It is cut down, and going through the gate more feels like a construction site than a cozy and beautiful town center. Last but just as big the harbour.... Big cracks in the ground looking quite bad and haven't been fixed for this time also. Had this been fixed instead of just accepting the dacay five out of five stars would not nearly have been enough đâ€ïž My suggestion would be to support the ground and people of Kos, and make a money-collection on the internet to get it fixed - sadly I do not know...
Read moreWe got the bus from Marmari (around 20-25 minutes and âŹ2.10 each, each way) it was a coach and had air con, so it was plenty comfortable.
We spent around 6 hours in Kos having a look around.
Starting in all the back streets and finding cool cafes tucked away. And then ending up in the high street looking through shops, both traditional and knock-off shops, too.
We then found some history and walked through a park which had a lot of ruins in it, which led us into a castle/fort on the harbour. It was really interesting learning about the history and how old all of the artefacts/buildings were. Even my 3 year old enjoyed herself.
We then walked along the harbour front before retreating to the back streets where we had found a lovley cafe before to cool off as it was 27°C.
We then went back to the harbour and had some drinks at a bar/ restaurant for âŹ2.50 a pint. Before catching the bus back.
We were only in Kos for a week. But if we had the chance, we would have loved to return to Kos Town, which offers all kinds of...
