What an amazing place! One of the more interesting ruins on Kos. Great restoration clearly shows what is original. Informative signage. I found it very thought provoking in a number of ways, especially as this is so far from my personal field of expertise. For example the villa had very sophisticated plumbing. It was made with high end materials, and beautifully decorated with lots of art, with great thought given to lighting and entertainment. It's position was amazing too, close to the intersection of the main road to the harbor and the main east west road which was used for processions, and close to the most important cluster of public buildings and the odeon. I highly recommend to walk the whole area surrounding it. There is so much to see. You may also be amazed, with the help of your imagination, by how beautiful and advanced the city must have been some 2000 years ago. I loved getting so close and walking the ruins, but was also astonished at how little care seems too be taken to preserve this treasure. Imagine 2000 year old mosaics have been unearthed and now left out...
Read moreOne star for existing, one star because the restoration is fairly interesting. No additional stars due to racism/racial profiling and mistreatment. My family of four arrived and paid the 6 euro admission per person (high for a 15-20 min view time. We were offered audio devices to narrate the tour. While we are all U.S. citizens and English speakers, one in our group prefers Arabic for complex narratives. I thought it wouldn’t hurt to ask if Arabic was an available language. It was not, only English and German. We were then given two audio devices amongst the four of us. We thought that was odd, but went with it. We toured around and got to the rear where there’s an outside area (not restored after an earthquake). We started to head outside and were then accosted by the man up front insisting he take the audio devices, like we were going to steal them. We told him we weren’t finished with the tour, but he still insisted. I would stay far away from this racist, hateful institution. There are too many other great things...
Read moreA very unimpressive experience.
I bought a combi ticket for 15 euro allowing visitation to the archeological museum, casa romana and asklepion. After visiting the archeological museum, the casa romana feels very underwhelming.
The inside of the house is nearly fully renovated, which is understandable but the untouched areas were all sealed off so it was very hard to see the mosaic floor tiling for example. The renovated rooms were bland and just contained an info panel about historical artefacts, sometimes accompanied by actual physical items. The archelogical museum nearby have the same items on a way better display and more detailed information.
The worst part was the multitude of modern architecture panels depicting buildings all over the world. It has no place and just looks...
