As a social and cultural anthropologist, I was really looking forward to visiting this museum to learn more about the region’s ancient history.
The collection I managed to see was fascinating. However, and most unfortunately, the experience was marred by the incredibly rude behavior of two staff members.
Around 10 minutes before closing, I tried to enter one last room, only to be scoffed at and told I had to go quickly. Moreover, they laughed at the idea that I might still see the downstairs section—which, up until that point, I hadn’t even known existed because I was never told and not provided with a map. They kept repeating this, lingering behind me in a way that felt deliberately obnoxious and oddly intimidating.
I calmly mentioned on my way out that it would have been helpful to be given a map or some guidance at the start of my visit so I could have planned my time better. I wasn’t asking to stay longer—just offering feedback so others, especially those visiting from abroad, don’t miss out.
But, this was met with yelling—literally yelling—from the same intentionally intimidating man and woman, insisting I had been told and that everyone is told. They were so aggressive and frankly loud (odd as this is a museum...), I had to just walk away.
What’s worse, after reading other reviews, it seems I’m far from the only one who’s had this experience—and there are mentions of racist behavior towards international visitors. That’s not only unacceptable on every level, but moreso profoundly ironic for a museum that claims to celebrate the region’s diversity and multicultural history.
It’s a shame, because the exhibits themselves are well worth a visit. But unless there’s serious change in how the staff treat guests, it’s hard to recommend this experience...

Read moreVisiting this museum was truly beautiful and fascinating, especially for someone like me who loves history and the civilizations of different countries and deeply respects them.
Unfortunately, I experienced some very inappropriate and rude behavior from the staff, which was far from friendly. They shouted loudly at me, asking why I was taking so many photos. Also, during the ticket purchase, there was no mention that the museum has a basement level open for visits, nor was any map or information provided to tourists about the museum’s layout or its closing time.
Just half an hour before closing, a man rudely and impatiently told me I couldn't go in because it was closed. However, when I spoke with another tourist, I found out there was a lower level to the museum. I returned to the ticket counter and asked, and the person there said, “Yes, you can go downstairs, it’s open for another 30 minutes.”
In my opinion, such impolite staff are not suitable for working in an archaeological museum that deals with tourists. I sincerely hope the Greek Ministry of Culture and Heritage takes this issue seriously and addresses...
