Shamed for wearing a long dress?*
The tower is pretty and a historic site with each floor having a different focus of the history of Thessaloniki. The view from the top was also beautiful. The price was 6€ and there was WiFi and a free audio guide available in many different languages.
*The sun was very strong outside as it was around 15 so we decided to reapply sunscreen before leaving. (Not obstructing any walk ways or taking up space near the exhibitions. It was in the hallway where other people had sat down for much longer times, earlier when the museum was much busier - without any staff saying anything even though they were right there). A lady with a name badge (museum staff) was silently staring daggers at my friend (for a long time). Making her feel uncomfortable. We greeted the lady with a hi/hello and she started walking away, but then said that we can’t do that here. I asked her if she meant applying sunscreen, to which she answered it is forbidden, I pressed further on why (I understand that the museums interior could somehow be sensitive to the spray sunscreen and wanted to make sure) and she said because there’s so many people here (gesturing to the empty hallway we were currently in). We both got a strong feeling that she was taking personal offence to my friends long dress rather than anything to do with the museum. (She was only staring at her, even though I too was applying sunscreen and was exposing more skin - shorts and a short sleeve button up with the top two buttons open). My friend felt shamed and very embarrassed for being more covered than myself. This made me really disappointed in the place and I wouldn’t recommend...
Read moreTLDR audiovisuals not working, audio guide lacking in deep information and difficult to follow. If it had been any more expensive (it was 6 euros) I would have asked for a refund by the second floor. The tower itself is very pretty, but the museum is terrible. If you're going to have a museum that's almost entirely based on audio-visual installations, at the very least they should be working. At least 3 screens/speakers per floor, were not working on our visit, and the majority had issues such as having the computer menu displayed on the bottom of the screen. I am very interested in history, and whilst I was happy to have the English audio guide, it was really difficult to find what exhibit you're supposed to be looking at for each segment, and there was no signage to indicate where to go next. And the audio guide just didn't give any extra information for many exhibits, just "this is a slideshow". For a museum billed as the history of Thessaloniki it was really lacking in information - I could have learned more sitting at home listening to a podcast and googling the places they mention to look at pictures. On the visuals, all the labelling was in Greek letters, which I can read so I could see place names etc, but I can't imagine how much information others were getting from the maps etc without greek...
