Frankish Castle Paroikia — Attraction in Paros Municipality

Visiting the Frankish Castle in Paroikia was like being transported back in time – minus the part where I’m wearing a suit of armor and battling dragons (although, I was totally up for it!).

The moment I laid eyes on this ancient wonder, I was so excited that I completely forgot to take any pictures. So, if you’re looking for a photo of me grinning like an overenthusiastic time traveler, you’re out of luck! I don’t have one…..

This castle is an absolute gem, towering over Paroikia with all the mysterious allure of a superstar. It’s like it knows it’s the Beyoncé of ancient ruins – you can look, but you can’t touch (or in this case, go inside).

That’s right, folks, you can only admire this beauty from the outside. I was so ready to channel my inner Indiana Jones, but alas, the gates remained firmly closed, and my dreams of discovering hidden treasure were dashed. Maybe it’s for the best – who knows what kind of booby traps I might’ve triggered with my clumsiness!

Even though I couldn’t explore the interior, just standing near it gave me all the feels. The stone walls seem to whisper stories of, battles, and maybe a few dinner parties (because even back then, who doesn’t love a good feast?). The views from the castle are just as legendary – I could’ve stayed there all day, soaking in the history and the epic scenery.

So, if you’re in Paroikia, make sure to swing by the Frankish Castle. You might not get to storm the gates, but you’ll definitely leave with a sense of awe and maybe a tinge of jealousy towards the people who built it. And hey, don’t forget to take pictures – unless you’re too busy geeking out like I was! Trust me, this place is a must-see, even if you can’t...

Don't go expecting a full castle. This is the ruins of one which have since been surrounded by more modern buildings, though there is a poetic justice that the castle which was built from Athenian temples was then used to build houses. I do like the idea of a Medieval castle hidden in the streets with little sections of it visible - a cornerstone here and stairway there, but Paros should make more of it. Το Κάστρο της Παροικίας, το οποίο συνηθίζεται να το αποκαλούν Φραγκοκάστελο βρίσκεται στο λόφο του Αγίου Κωνσταντίνου λίγο πριν και πάνω από το λιμάνι της Παροικίας. Το Κάστρο κατασκεύαστηκε από τους Ενετούς μετά την άλωση της Κωνσταντινούπολης από τους Λατίνους. Η Πάρος και η Νάξος θα περνάγανε στα χέρια του Μάρκου Σανούδου, ανιψιού του Δόγη της Βενετίας, μεταξύ του 1204 και 1207. Στην συνέχεια ο Σανούδος επρόκειτο να κατασκευάσει το εν λόγω Κάστρο, που το εξωτερικό τείχος του ήταν σύριζα στον κάθετο βράχο που υψωνόταν από την θάλασσα και έτσι είχε τον έλεγχο της εισόδου στο λιμάνι. ( μέχρι και τα μέσα του 20ου αιώνα δεν υπήρχε ο παραλιακός δρόμος που σταδιακά επεκτάθηκε σε αυτό που βλέπουμε σήμερα). Η κατασκευή του Κάστρου στηρίχθηκε σε υλικά από την αρχαία Ακρόπολη της Παροικίας και αυτό είναι σήμερα ορατό σε ένα τμήμα του πύργου που διασώζεται. Μέσα στα όρια του Κάστρου αναπτύχθηκε ένας μεσαιωνικός οικισμός, ο οποίος στα σύγχρονα χρόνια έχει χαρακτηριστεί διατηρητέος και είναι προφανές και ορατό στον επισκέπτη η ενσωμάτωση των αρχαίων υλικών, μαρμάρων κλπ στα σπίτια και στους μικρούς ναούς που υπάρχουν στην γειτονιά του Κάστρου που αυτονόητα κατοικείται...
