Lehel Market in Budapest is a true hidden gem and a must-visit for anyone seeking an authentic local experience in the city. Unlike the more touristy Central Market Hall, Lehel Market is where locals shop for their daily produce, meats, cheeses, and baked goods, giving it a genuine and vibrant atmosphere. The market is housed in a quirky, colorful building and features a bright, airy interior filled with a wonderful array of stalls. The ground floor is a paradise for food lovers, offering everything from fresh fruits and vegetables to artisanal cheeses, cured meats, and homemade pastries. Don’t miss the chance to try local favorites like lángos-there are several stalls serving this delicious Hungarian snack, and many consider the versions here to be among the best in Budapest. The market also features excellent Vietnamese food stands and what some call the best fried chicken sandwich in the city. Upstairs, you’ll find cafes, bars, and a variety of household goods, as well as a handy post office. Prices are generally lower than in the city center, making it a great spot for bargain hunters and anyone wanting to shop like a local. The vendors are friendly and passionate about their products, and while English isn’t widely spoken, you’ll always get by with a smile and a bit of patience. Lehel Market is easily accessible by public transport and is open every day, with the liveliest atmosphere in the morning when the stalls are fully stocked. Whether you’re looking to sample authentic Hungarian flavors, pick up unique souvenirs, or simply soak in the bustling local vibe, Lehel Market offers a rich and memorable Budapest experience. Tartoztak nekem.
A very bad place, this butcher shop, tax evasion, and the racist and black-hearted boss overcharged me and found various reasons not to pay me back. A month ago I bought half a pound of beef here worth 3070 HUF. I paid with Apple pay. Their staff mistakenly pressed an extra zero and charged me 30700 HUF. When I went back to them three days later, they told me I'll have to wait until their bank statement comes out next month to check. So I went to see them in November, four times in total. Each time they had a new reason and said they would wait until next time. Finally, they started to make excuses for not returning the money to me, asking me why I didn't go earlier and why I didn't have a receipt. , but in fact they didn’t give me a receipt, and they didn’t recognize my mobile phone payment record. I printed out the bank statement and showed it to them, and they started to find other reasons again, insisting that I had no way to prove that I didn’t buy so many things. I provided all the proof. I couldn't believe that this kind of bullying of consumers could happen so blatantly. She asked me about my nationality and started to ignore me. She found various reasons to refuse to give me money. They owed me money. I have 27,630 forints. As a girl, I can’t buy so many things. They bully me because I’m a foreigner and I don’t understand the language. I can’t do anything to them! Even if all my evidence matches her business records. They had no intention of paying me back from the beginning, they delayed, wasted my time, and finally refused to pay me back! Their attitude was extremely bad and they didn't want to help me solve the problem at all, because they were greedy and only made money that they didn't care about. And according to my observation, there is tax evasion in their store. They do not give receipts to all customers, and even put back the fat they have bitten and sell it to customers. This kind of unscrupulous business should not exist in the...
Read moreLehel Market was the most local market for me for all central Budapest markets when it comes to shopping local with reasonable pricing. I think that its location on the fringes of downtown & its early hours makes it less sought out by tourists and thus more locally oriented.
I would advise that you visit early in the morning before 11/12 so as to catch the sellers and shops .
There is a variety of shops ranging pastries, bakeries, butchers, cheese and veggies as well as honey & herbs speciality stores.
It's about a 1/3 in size compared to Central Market Hall yet you could get some really good bargains on some local souvenirs like honey, Pollen, soaps, paprika!
There is a pastries stall on the ground floor across from veggies stands that has a wide and delicious variety of sweets. I tried the marzipan cake covered chocolate and coffee and stuffed with marzipan and choco cream 😋. I highly recommend grabbing some for a walk or picnic !
