The Mystery Hotel in Budapest is a fine hotel. Right of the bat I want to say that I don’t discourage anyone from staying at this place. However, true to its name, the hotel does have a number of mysteries to its place and operation that I think you should be aware of before booking your stay.
Some mysteries about the rooms you can find in the Rooms section of the review. Another architectural mystery for me was the location of the spa. Being a 5-star hotel, of course there is a spa, but it is located close to the lobby without any barrier to act as climate control. Consequently, in the lobby and surrounding areas (which may very well include YOUR ROOM) it is tropically hot, which causes a rather striking temperature difference when you step through the front door. Personally, I was not a fan… I sure could have used a fan, though.
Then there are some mysteries I found in the operation. First off, there is no plug for the sink, so bring you own. Secondly, like any hotel, there is a system for signalling a request not to be disturbed or to have the room cleaned. There are items for this to hang on the door, located at the door; this is logical. Like any modern hotel, there is also a system for signalling that you do not need to have the towels and bedsheets refreshed. There is an item for this to hang on the door… located not at the door but at the telephone next to the bed; this is NOT logical. Therefore, I relocated this item near the door with the other door signals. If you hang this item on the door, it will be there when you get back; this is logical. However, if you don’t use this item, then it will be put back at the telephone when you get back; this is NOT logical. Unfortunately, there is NOT an option to signal: “just change the sheets and towels and leave everything else as is.” Furthermore, for some mysterious reason the towels are not always immediately replaced. So, if you don’t use this item and are confused to find it back at the telephone, then you can also be confused that you have no towels. You then have to report to the reception that you would like to have new towels. Being a 5-star hotel, the staff is really helpful in this place, so I had new towels within 2 minutes. Thirdly, for some mysterious reason there’s a sticker on the toilet paper when you arrive. Given the flimsy structural integrity of toilet paper, the first sheet of paper is effectively taped to the rest of the roll; the sticker is never going to tear because it’s not the structural weak point. I found this rather annoying, as I had to use much more toilet paper than I needed just to get the sticker of. As mentioned at the start of this review, all in all it’s a fine hotel with many excellent services. There are also good design decisions, such as a separated toilet and shower. And they do many of the 5-star hotel tropes right. I mentioned there’s a spa, but they also do the daily Belgian chocolates and origami toilet paper. However, being a 5-star hotel, I was hoping, nay expecting, that these would all be extra’s instead of trade-offs to the service of a 4-star hotel. Because reality didn’t match my expectations, I was disappointed with the hotel during my stay. But after reading this review (compliments if you made it this far) you can set more realistic expectations, so you won’t be disappointed. Regardless, I will look for another hotel next time I’m...
Read moreMy boyfriend and I stayed at the Mystery Hotel for 4 nights. We were absolutely blown away with how absolutely stunning it was! And the staff are exceptional. We loved every second here and didn’t want to leave. This was a true 5 Star Hotel. Here is a summary of our experience:
Room:
We stayed in Room 001, which was the Duplex King. It was super spacious and everywhere was spotlessly clean. It had such a regal feel to it. The shower is incredible. Really good water pressure and felt really luxury. Inside the shower was complimentary Rituals Shampoo, Conditioner and Shower Gel! So handy and saved us on luggage space. There is a TV upstairs (with Disney Channel on!!) and a lovely Sofa next to the Bed. The room was really cozy and the bed was extremely comfortable and soft.
Staff:
The staff are all very efficient, friendly and are happy to help with anything needed. Special thank you to Greta, the staff on Reception and the waiters in the Great Hall, for making our stay so pleasant and fantastic.
Spa:
We went to the hotel Spa when it was a rainy afternoon. We tried out the Steam Room, Sauna and the iconic Jacuzzi. The steam room and sauna were the perfect temperatures and were absolutely amazing. They offer free Lemon-Lime water in the Spa so you can hydrate easily. The lady behind the desk pushes a button to turn on the bubbles for the Jacuzzi. The jacuzzi was absolutely heavenly and so relaxing! The view was stunning too from inside. Also, a perfect place for a great Instagram pic! The spa is kept immaculately clean and is so relaxing. Definitely a must visit spot in the hotel!
Breakfast:
We had the breakfast every morning in the hotel. There is something for everybody on the menu, from classic hot food to the classic cold foods. It was delicious and highly recommend adding it to your booking as it is well worth it! The Great Hall is also Stunning and so relaxing to eat in. The staff are amazing and brought us pots of English Breakfast Tea on request. My favourite was the mini pancakes and croissants! Whilst my boyfriend loved the Toast and Sausages! Thy opened at 7am so we was able to start our day early and explore all of Budapest!
Bar:
We tried 4 of the cocktails on the menu in the Bar within the Great Hall. Their cocktails were based off of the Greek Gods, a concept I have never seen before! My favourite was the Hermes Cocktail – a must try! All the drinks were made very carefully by the bar staff and tasted divine! They were also displayed beautifully in the cool glassware!
Location:
The Mystery Hotel was 7 minutes to the Tram (Number 4 and 6, which goes round the outskirts of the inner city). And then it was a short 8 minutes’ walk to Metro 1 (which went straight into the city and out o the famous Baths). It is also walking distance to lots of amazing places.
We used a Bolt to get to and from the airport to here. It was really quick and easy to get to.
Top Tips:
• If you have a late flight, the hotel offers Luggage Storage, free of charge.
We definitely will be back to stay at this stunning hotel again! Thank you so much for such a magical, memorable and...

The Mystery Hotel Budapest is a real find. I think tour guide Rick Steves would love this place - a tremendous bargain with amazing staff. I was in Budapest on business, so all I ever need is a clean, quiet room, comfortable bed, nice linens, with good Air Conditioning (Room can cool below 19 Deg C). The Mystery Hotel delivers all of this - and more!
I was staying in the hotel with several other team members for 2 nights, and had a great experience. I went away for two days, and came back to Budapest for three more nights. To be closer to the tourist areas, I switched hotels to the Grand Kempinski which is next to the Ritz Carlton. I stayed one night at the Kempinski, but did not sleep well for various reasons. I switched back to the Mystery Hotel for my remaining 3 days in the city because it was so superior in every way (except location) - and I am so happy I did. Sleep is why hotels exist!!!
Pros: By far - the people. They did all they could to ensure we were comfortable. They thought of everything. One day, our team got up early for a meeting - and despite the kitchen being closed early in the day, they delivered box breakfasts to our rooms so we could get something to eat before we left. Service is done with a smile and with enthusiasm - everywhere in the hotel. Truly some of the best service / best attitude I have ever experienced.
The rooftop bar - incredible views, great drinks, and good food. Try the Gin menu - try them all!
Breakfast - in a fantastic Great Hall, with good food and great service
The rooms are clean, comfortable, and cold (if you want them cold - which I do!!). Great pillows, great showers, and well appointed.
Cons (minor, but just so you are aware): Eclectic decorating. I actually like it - especially the masterpieces with a spin (Girl with a pearl earing - on a cell phone). It is a bit unconventional, and not a normal hotel, but it works.
The location - a bit far from the center of all, but within a 10 to 15 minute walk of the main tourist areas. With the abundance of taxis bikes, and scooters, it did not pose a problem for me - and there are several very good restaurants within a very short walk.
Soap Dish in the shower doesn't drain, so it holds a pool of water which makes the bar soap mushy.
Overall, I have been thoroughly pleased and happy with this hotel. The most important point of a hotel is a good nights sleep - in this hotel - I have slept beautifully. On top of that, all of the other benefits are frosting on the cake - especially the team.
When I come back to Budapest - I will be...
