Great hotel. Rooms are clean and staff often come to give them a little refresh while you're out (even leaving little chocolates behind when they make the beds!). There are also spa/jacuzzi facilities down on the ground floor that you can make use of, including a sauna, steam room and bookable massages if that's your thing. One small comment I have about the jacuzzi is that the bubbles seem to be on a timer with a very long interval, so if you get in and the jets are not fully blowing, you may be waiting a while until they turn back on. I am unsure if you can ask the staff to do this for you, but there weren't any down there the two times that we made use of it - though it's not far from reception so I am sure you could go and ask them if you wanted. Now onto the service we received at The Sky Garden (hence the 4 star review rather than 5). We went up there one afternoon (over 1 hour before we were told a private event would have the venue booked exclusively). Staff seemed incredibly unwilling to serve us, including telling us that we would have to eat quickly if we wanted to be served food before they closed - feeling rushed at the restaurant is not what you expect in a 5-star hotel. When we realised that the menu is a full 3 courses rather than more snacky food items, we asked the waiter where we could go locally for smaller food items, to which she extremely unhelpfully and flatly told us to ask reception instead, and then took the menus. We also returned a day later hoping this was a one off experience, having got reception to ring ahead for the three of us. We walked up to another staff member who then told us that they only expected 2 people rather than 3, and that there isn't a lot of room. No smiles or anything, they then just pointed to a table and walked off after handing us menus. Again, they generally seemed like they didn't actually want to serve us. The cherry on top was a 14% 'service' charge added to the bill. What service?!! There was one very smiley young staff member, and she was always helpful. So it seems it isn't all of them, just some from our experience. It's a shame that the staff at the Sky Garden weren't on par, as the rest of the staff were great. I would still recommend staying here, just don't have very high hopes for a relaxed Sky Garden experience, as we definitely did not.

An honest review. When I booked a 5*, I assumed I would get a certain level of service. I could only compare to other 4* I had previously stated in, in London and Mexico. Room: We stayed in the superior king, bed and breakfast. The room was nice, smaller with a tiny window. But clean and fresh. The only downside was the duvet cover! It could barely cover me and my husband. It was too small for a king size bed. The hotel itself is stunning. We didn't use the spa, but it did look beautiful. Breakfast: we were met by a man with a clipboard, who asked our room and told us to find a seat. My issue with this is, a lot of the tables were not prepared still having plates on them or no cutlery etc on them. That's fine, I could get my own. But the quality and selection of food for breakfast was massively lacking. There were no menu options, only a buffet. This is where my comparison to other hotels comes into play. I expected more, more food, better service, the offer of coffee or tea!! I'm British, I need a cup of tea. There was also a rooftop bar, which closes early along with the bar. Service: We came here for my birthday, again previous times being away, the hotel have always offered a drink, a voucher, a chocolate on the pillow, even a little happy birthday welcome note. Nothing from here. On our last night we were in bed, ready for an early rise to catch the flight home. We were woken up by one of the staff at the door, asking if we had just arrived and were VIP. He gave us our details but we said we were leaving the following morning. Location: It was perfect for exploration. Close enough to walk everywhere and far enough away to be away from the hustle and bustle and noise. Overall, I don't think it warrants 5*, maybe 4* at a push. I put that down to amenities. It was semi value for money and the location was good.

We have just returned from 3 nights here for a belated honeymoon. We absolutely loved our time in Budapest, and the hotel was perfect! We had a duplex room which was beautiful and spacious - and we loved the air con! The large arched window is frosted so there's no outside view, but the room is gorgeous and was a welcome retreat after exploring the city on foot in scorching temperatures! It has everything one could need and housekeeping staff were extremely efficient and friendly. The whole hotel is wonderfully elegant and beautifully cool; we looked forward to stepping inside at the end of every boiling hot day sightseeing! (Temperatures during our visit were 30-35⁰C). Location is ideal for exploring the city, we did everything on foot but plenty of public transport options too. The decor of the public spaces in the Mystery Hotel is stunning - the Great Hall, main reception and spa area/courtyard especially. We didn't have any treatments, but the spa area is gloriously relaxing. I absolutely loved being in the jacuzzi and soaking up the atmosphere. Even the lifts are glamorous! Every member of staff we encountered was helpful, friendly and spoke excellent English - they were also patient with our attempts to learn the odd word of Hungarian! Breakfast was beautifully set out in the spectacular Great Hall, with everything we could need (and plenty, like cheesecake and apple pie, that we managed to resist first thing in the morning!) All in all, our first experience of a 5 star hotel has set the bar extremely high. We loved the Mystery Hotel and wouldn't hesitate to stay there again if we came back to Budapest.

The Mystery Hotel in Budapest is a fine hotel. Right of the bat I want to say that I don’t discourage anyone from staying at this place. However, true to its name, the hotel does have a number of mysteries to its place and operation that I think you should be aware of before booking your stay.

Some mysteries about the rooms you can find in the Rooms section of the review. Another architectural mystery for me was the location of the spa. Being a 5-star hotel, of course there is a spa, but it is located close to the lobby without any barrier to act as climate control. Consequently, in the lobby and surrounding areas (which may very well include YOUR ROOM) it is tropically hot, which causes a rather striking temperature difference when you step through the front door. Personally, I was not a fan… I sure could have used a fan, though.

Then there are some mysteries I found in the operation. First off, there is no plug for the sink, so bring you own. Secondly, like any hotel, there is a system for signalling a request not to be disturbed or to have the room cleaned. There are items for this to hang on the door, located at the door; this is logical. Like any modern hotel, there is also a system for signalling that you do not need to have the towels and bedsheets refreshed. There is an item for this to hang on the door… located not at the door but at the telephone next to the bed; this is NOT logical. Therefore, I relocated this item near the door with the other door signals. If you hang this item on the door, it will be there when you get back; this is logical. However, if you don’t use this item, then it will be put back at the telephone when you get back; this is NOT logical. Unfortunately, there is NOT an option to signal: “just change the sheets and towels and leave everything else as is.” Furthermore, for some mysterious reason the towels are not always immediately replaced. So, if you don’t use this item and are confused to find it back at the telephone, then you can also be confused that you have no towels. You then have to report to the reception that you would like to have new towels. Being a 5-star hotel, the staff is really helpful in this place, so I had new towels within 2 minutes. Thirdly, for some mysterious reason there’s a sticker on the toilet paper when you arrive. Given the flimsy structural integrity of toilet paper, the first sheet of paper is effectively taped to the rest of the roll; the sticker is never going to tear because it’s not the structural weak point. I found this rather annoying, as I had to use much more toilet paper than I needed just to get the sticker of. As mentioned at the start of this review, all in all it’s a fine hotel with many excellent services. There are also good design decisions, such as a separated toilet and shower. And they do many of the 5-star hotel tropes right. I mentioned there’s a spa, but they also do the daily Belgian chocolates and origami toilet paper. However, being a 5-star hotel, I was hoping, nay expecting, that these would all be extra’s instead of trade-offs to the service of a 4-star hotel. Because reality didn’t match my expectations, I was disappointed with the hotel during my stay. But after reading this review (compliments if you made it this far) you can set more realistic expectations, so you won’t be disappointed. Regardless, I will look for another hotel next time I’m...

My boyfriend and I stayed at the Mystery Hotel for 4 nights. We were absolutely blown away with how absolutely stunning it was! And the staff are exceptional. We loved every second here and didn’t want to leave. This was a true 5 Star Hotel. Here is a summary of our experience:

Room:

We stayed in Room 001, which was the Duplex King. It was super spacious and everywhere was spotlessly clean. It had such a regal feel to it. The shower is incredible. Really good water pressure and felt really luxury. Inside the shower was complimentary Rituals Shampoo, Conditioner and Shower Gel! So handy and saved us on luggage space. There is a TV upstairs (with Disney Channel on!!) and a lovely Sofa next to the Bed. The room was really cozy and the bed was extremely comfortable and soft.

Staff:

The staff are all very efficient, friendly and are happy to help with anything needed. Special thank you to Greta, the staff on Reception and the waiters in the Great Hall, for making our stay so pleasant and fantastic.

Spa:

We went to the hotel Spa when it was a rainy afternoon. We tried out the Steam Room, Sauna and the iconic Jacuzzi. The steam room and sauna were the perfect temperatures and were absolutely amazing. They offer free Lemon-Lime water in the Spa so you can hydrate easily. The lady behind the desk pushes a button to turn on the bubbles for the Jacuzzi. The jacuzzi was absolutely heavenly and so relaxing! The view was stunning too from inside. Also, a perfect place for a great Instagram pic! The spa is kept immaculately clean and is so relaxing. Definitely a must visit spot in the hotel!

Breakfast:

We had the breakfast every morning in the hotel. There is something for everybody on the menu, from classic hot food to the classic cold foods. It was delicious and highly recommend adding it to your booking as it is well worth it! The Great Hall is also Stunning and so relaxing to eat in. The staff are amazing and brought us pots of English Breakfast Tea on request. My favourite was the mini pancakes and croissants! Whilst my boyfriend loved the Toast and Sausages! Thy opened at 7am so we was able to start our day early and explore all of Budapest!

Bar:

We tried 4 of the cocktails on the menu in the Bar within the Great Hall. Their cocktails were based off of the Greek Gods, a concept I have never seen before! My favourite was the Hermes Cocktail – a must try! All the drinks were made very carefully by the bar staff and tasted divine! They were also displayed beautifully in the cool glassware!

Location:

The Mystery Hotel was 7 minutes to the Tram (Number 4 and 6, which goes round the outskirts of the inner city). And then it was a short 8 minutes’ walk to Metro 1 (which went straight into the city and out o the famous Baths). It is also walking distance to lots of amazing places.

We used a Bolt to get to and from the airport to here. It was really quick and easy to get to.

Top Tips:

• If you have a late flight, the hotel offers Luggage Storage, free of charge.

We definitely will be back to stay at this stunning hotel again! Thank you so much for such a magical, memorable and...

Worthy of my 5 Stars!

The Mystery Hotel Budapest is a real find. I think tour guide Rick Steves would love this place - a tremendous bargain with amazing staff. I was in Budapest on business, so all I ever need is a clean, quiet room, comfortable bed, nice linens, with good Air Conditioning (Room can cool below 19 Deg C). The Mystery Hotel delivers all of this - and more!

I was staying in the hotel with several other team members for 2 nights, and had a great experience. I went away for two days, and came back to Budapest for three more nights. To be closer to the tourist areas, I switched hotels to the Grand Kempinski which is next to the Ritz Carlton. I stayed one night at the Kempinski, but did not sleep well for various reasons. I switched back to the Mystery Hotel for my remaining 3 days in the city because it was so superior in every way (except location) - and I am so happy I did. Sleep is why hotels exist!!!

Pros: By far - the people. They did all they could to ensure we were comfortable. They thought of everything. One day, our team got up early for a meeting - and despite the kitchen being closed early in the day, they delivered box breakfasts to our rooms so we could get something to eat before we left. Service is done with a smile and with enthusiasm - everywhere in the hotel. Truly some of the best service / best attitude I have ever experienced.

The rooftop bar - incredible views, great drinks, and good food. Try the Gin menu - try them all!

Breakfast - in a fantastic Great Hall, with good food and great service

The rooms are clean, comfortable, and cold (if you want them cold - which I do!!). Great pillows, great showers, and well appointed.

Cons (minor, but just so you are aware): Eclectic decorating. I actually like it - especially the masterpieces with a spin (Girl with a pearl earing - on a cell phone). It is a bit unconventional, and not a normal hotel, but it works.

The location - a bit far from the center of all, but within a 10 to 15 minute walk of the main tourist areas. With the abundance of taxis bikes, and scooters, it did not pose a problem for me - and there are several very good restaurants within a very short walk.

Soap Dish in the shower doesn't drain, so it holds a pool of water which makes the bar soap mushy.

Overall, I have been thoroughly pleased and happy with this hotel. The most important point of a hotel is a good nights sleep - in this hotel - I have slept beautifully. On top of that, all of the other benefits are frosting on the cake - especially the team.

When I come back to Budapest - I will be...
