One of the great theatres in Budapest along with the Opera and Madách, Thália etc. A beautiful building inside and out and showing mostly high end critically acclaimed productions. I've been here quite a few times and have to say that being in the Balcony/Karzat is just not worth it unless you are desperate. You get a fantastic view of the amazing chandelier and the ceiling, but not much else. Previous shows we have sat in the front few rows on the ground level and whatever we've seen really gives you the live theatre experience. You can SMELL the grease paint. You can HEAR the actors breathing, their footsteps, etc. You KNOW you are there. Upstairs you might as well be watching it on TV. Actors are so small you can't see their expressions. You miss anything happening at front of stage, even if you REALLY lean forward. This happened on "The Dictator" which we saw on this occasion. Wonderful production, but we really had trouble seeing what was happening. Plus, even in winter it gets REALLY warm up there. And we've heard from others that on hot summer days, it's unbearable. They've had to leave it was so uncomfortable. This really applies to all the classical theatre house in Budapest. Go the extra mile and pay for the more expensive seats in the front 10 or so rows. It's still comparatively cheap. Even the most expensive seats will cost less than $50AUD. Theatres have become extremely popular over the last 10 years. You used to be able to buy good seats a few days before at almost any theatre. Now in 2018, even 6 weeks or so prior, it's difficult to get seats, even up in the balconies. Especially if you are trying to seat several...
Read moreI saw a live theatre adaptation of Charlie Chaplin's feature film 'The Dictator' in this late 19th Century theatre. A huge amount of attention and energy was invested into this full bodied performance, both by the actors and by the production designers. Well done all round! A special word of note needs to be extended to Attila Vidnyanszky Jr who played the Hynkel/ Barber characters. When Chaplin played these roles he was afforded the luxury of multiple cuts and edits over an extended filming period. For Attila to have achieved this in live time over a three hour production, with all the effort that it entails,...
Read moreI am someone who is very artistic hence I really like to go to museums, theatres, cinemas and even smaller dance/art performances. I cannot even count how many times I've been in Vígszínház in this year only. I go there every single year multiple times since 2016. There is always an act which is new, exciting or a comfort act for me. But it is really helpful if you speak Hungarian, otherwise you might not be able to understand each performance. I highly recommend visiting this place even if you're not watching anything just on a...
